Hello List, I just wondered if anyone had a connection to Francis Ignatious McDermott. He was married to Margaret Hibbert and had several children. The children were as follows: Francis born 1929 Margaret A. Born 1925 Eleanor born 1920 Annie born 1921 Lilian born 1926 I believe they lived in Gateshead. I am a descendent of Michael McDermott who arrived in England about 1851. I was born in Canada but may be visiting Co. Durham this year. Isabel Love
Many thanks Stan and Alan for your helpful replies I haven't realised exactly where the farm was; I walk past here several times per week, and yet nothing remains! Rob
Rob - Roker Farm was in the vicinity of what is now Claremont Road. I have seen a photo of St. Andrew's Church 'nearing completion' in 1907 with cows in the adjacent field (now Talbot Road), that was part of Roker Farm. Alan Vickers.
The farm was roughly where nos 4-9 Claremont Avenue are now Stan mapstone On 25 March 2010 14:08, alan-vickers@lineone.net <alan-vickers@lineone.net> wrote: > Rob - Roker Farm was in the vicinity of what is now Claremont Road. > > I have seen a photo of St. Andrew's Church 'nearing completion' in > 1907 with cows in the adjacent field (now Talbot Road), that was part > of Roker Farm. > > Alan Vickers. > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Pat - the latest directory that I have is Wards Directory for 1915- 16. This lists: "Chester Road 153 Edminson N Vanman" It may not have been a business address at that time. Alan Vickers.

Stan - I should have referred to Whites Directory of Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham etc, 1847 and not Hagars 1951 directory, my apologies for that mistake. The entry is on page 362 in the Sunderland section. Alan Vickers.
In Ward's 1850 Directory Mrs Hannah Coxon has a seminary in Hill Street Bishopwearmouth, and is listed at 6 Hill Street in Slater's 1855 Directory. Hill Street is off Hendon Road.
