On the back is printed: D.A.MACLEAN, Photographer Middlesboro', Blackpool & Mack, 12 Holmeside, Sunderland, 3798 Any ideas what or where "Mack" was, and does 3798 mean anything - it isn't a serial number because it is printed with the rest of it. On the 1911 census 12 Holmeside is a lock-up shop, no residents. Would this have been a "proof" print, from which one could select enlargements - I've never seen such a small studio picture before? 3. I remember the "Villa" pop factory. It was at the corner of Wilson Street?(or the next street) and Hylton Road. Wilson Street was between Pallion Road and Rutland Street, opposite what is now part of the hospital and what was then the Cottage Homes. From the street you could see part of the bottling line and see the loading bays for the delivery lorries. I believe you could buy pop directly from the factory. Meg Hartford

    3. I'd like to thank Doris at John.harker for her response, reminding me that Mayfair toffees had premises on Durham Road as well as Chester Road/Low Row & for her suggestion of the Dunning Street factory. An older relative who lived in Dunning Street as a child has now told me of the sweet factory at the foot of the street and behind Vaux Brewery and remembers that the air-raid shelter for the area was in the brewery's premises, which ties in with my aunt's story. Unfortunately, like Doris' relative also, my relative cannot recall the factory's name. Thanks for helping pin down the location. Marie Kerr

I can recall the Mayfair on the corner of Old Chester Road & Low Row near St Mary's School but my 94 yr old aunt worked at another one in the area.I remember her telling me that in WW2 they used Vaux stables as their air-raid shelter, if that helps pin it down. I think you could be right - maybe it is supposed to mean D.A.Maclean of Middlesboro and Blackpool, also another shop called "Mack" in Sunderland. I have heard that photographers were notorious for saying they were "of Paris, Vienna and Monkwearmouth" for example because it looked good and in those days nobody could disprove it. Adrian

    3. Bruce - the number you refer to is the reference for a certificate. County Durham at that time was area 24, [later 10a] Northumberland was 25 [later 10b] and the number 151 is the page number. You need these references if you are going to order a certificate from the GRO Heather Saskatoon, Canada > The number "24 151" appears in Stan`s reply. 3. It is Sunderland Moor Orphan Asylum, founded and endowed in 1853, situated on the edge of the Town Moor, and opened 17th October 1861, for the reception or orphan sons of seamen. Although it was called an Orphanage, and originally founded for the sons of seafarers, it appears to have been open to children whose father had died but whose mother was still alive. There were only places for fifty boys, who were allowed to visit their families once a month between 9 am. and 8 pm. It is a now listed building see http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1398&lnk=160 It was nowhere near the Empire Stan Mapstone On 27 September 2010 19:17, Eileen White <eileenhwhite@hotmail.com> wrote: > Hi > > Does anyone know anything about a seafarers orphanage in Sunderland?
