Dodds. The Black Death arrived on the south coast of England in 1348, it involved two types, bubonic and pneumonic plague, and it is estimated to have killed 20% of England's population. The plague arrived in County Durham in 1349, and is assumed to have entered by way of Sunderland, and spread out from there. It struck Wearside hard with death rates of about 60%. The Black Death inevitably affected the economy, and for a variety of reasons hastened the change from the economic system in which unfree peasants held land primarily in return for labour services to one in which land was principally held in return for money rents. Ambitious peasants now had greater opportunities to advance themselves, by for example, acquiring vacant land, than had been the case, and resulted in a more diverse society. A survey of the see's lands in 1381 highlighted the changes that had taken place Regards Stan Mapstone

    3. Recently watched a public broadcasting show on plague in village of Eams, 17th century. Wondered if anyone knows of a web site about the plague in Northeast England. How it hit various villages/towns/cities, families most affected, families who survived, etc. This story was about how an apparent genetic mutation helped some europeans survive the plague, and focused on scientific research, but got me to thinking about how it affected MY ancestors. Any ideas, anyone? I'm doing gen. research, but trying to learn more about how my ancestors lived, who they were, their dreams and aspirations, if they had any, their struggles to survive, why they may have moved around, etc., etc. MY ancestors were mostly peasants, so we can't go back to a great family history and plagerize someone else's work. The 1857 map does not have all the street names shown. Monkwearmouth Shore was also known as The Barbary Coast. Regards Stan Mapstone

    3. Hi I am trying to help a lady who is having difficulty finding a member of her family, she is not on the net so I have offered to post this message. The person she is looking for is called William LASH born 1840-50 and married in Sunderland in 1866. She had no whereabouts from him from 1870, but she is also stuck to the details of his birth and where in the north East he was born, if he was born in the North East at all. She knows he was a Mariner and that his father was also William LASH a mariner. Does anyone have these names in the family or know of them at all. I would like to be able to give her some good news! Many thanks Sue

    1. [SUNDERLAND] FW: [YKS] New Version of UK BMD web site.
    2. Branton Family Tree
    3. Forwarding this with permission from the author. This may interest others. Sue Dear all, A new version of the UK BMD web site went on the air tonight. It is a complete re-write and offers links to over 150 web sites that offer on-line information for UK births, marriages and deaths. http://www.UKBMD.org.uk More sites will be added as and when I find out about them. Let me know of any missing ones. The new site is navigated by a menu on its left side. For example, if all you want is the links to the local BMD sites, such as Cheshire BMD, then simply press the 'Local BMD' button. Note that the Isle-of-Wight are the latest to offer BMD indexes on-line. (Under Hampshire, if you're searching by county) If you want information specific to a county (or country), select one from the drop-down list and then press the 'County' button. Other buttons should be self-explanatory. I only subscribe to CHS, YKS and GENBRIT, so please cross post this note to as many genealogy lists as you can, as most counties have entries on the new site. Hope you find it useful ! -- regards, Ian Hartas, webmaster@ukbmd.org.uk ---------------------------------------- There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't. ---------------------------------------- ==== YORKSGEN Mailing List ==== The Yorksgen-L Administrator is Janice Wood: janwood50@btinternet.com
