The problem could stem from the e-mail address you're using now being different from the one you used to subscribe with. Even if there is one letter different you won't be able to unsubscribe from the list using the address you use now. Some ISP's do this without their customer's knowledge so you may not even be aware of any change to your address. However, if you have had other e-mail addresses then it's possible you used it or one of them to subscribe to this list. In either situation the only person who can unsubscribe you from this list is our List Admin who can be contacted at: ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND-admin@rootsweb.com Take care Jayne St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada Jayne's Digital Reflections: http://www.jadire.com Archive CD Books: http://www.archivecdbooks.org If you don't know your family's history, then you don't know anything. My 3rd great grandmother was Elizabeth COATES. When she married my 3rd great grandfather, George DAVISON, on 15 Oct 1845 she was residing at 21, Vine Street, Sunderland. Elizabeth gives her father's name as John COATES, Mariner. >From their entry in the 1851 Bishopwearmouth census Elizabeth was aged 28 years with her place of birth given as Sunderland. Her birth year calculates to be approximately 1823. I have been unable to find them in 1861 census CD from Archive CD Books and in 1881 George and Elizabeth are listed as living at 11, Cliff Terrace with their widowed daughter Elizabeth SCOTT and their three SCOTT grandchildren The only Elizabeth COATES I can find so far is from the IGI and was baptized in Sunderland 22 Sep 1822 to John COATES and Mary Ann HARDY. The other I have found is one baptized in Auckland 3 Dec 1823 to John COATES and Elizabeth. Knowing both areas somewhat I would say the Elizabeth in 1822 is mine but obviously before I can say 100% that she is I need to do further investigations. As she was already married by 1851 then obviously she would not be listed in the 1851 census with her parents. A lookup was done in the 1851 census for a John COATES, Mariner in Sunderland but nothing was found. Any help with this line would be very much appreciated. Just joined the list and am a comparative newcomer to family reseach. I have discovered that my great grandfather, Roger Wilson, 1839- ?? who lived in Durham and Bishopswearmouth near Sunderland, at various times of his life, had a daughter Emily who marrid into the Farbes family aeound 1875. After that a total blank. Anyone researching the Farbes family who has a Wilson link? Bob Wilson Los Angeles (ex-Lynemouth, Northumberland)
The Roberts family is to be found on the 1891 census at RG12/4114 Folio 35 p4 ED 8 which is Newbottle. There is another son Samuel aged 18 that you didn't mention. The rest are the same. It says that Hugh was born at Amboch but I think that's going to be Amlwch, Anglesey. The Swains proved a little more difficult to find but I'm fairly sure this is the family at RG12/4147 Folio 108 p32 ED7a which is Monkwearmouth. They are indexed as Swani and Jemima is Junnua! However the other details seem to fit the 1881 family. It includes children Charles, Fanny W., John Geo and Mary C. For some reason the image is not available and so I can't be certain. I don't know if Jemima is a widow here but there's no sign of Brady so it looks that way. I hope this helps, Regards, Irene

Hi, Currently researching the family of PILE who were shipbuilders in Sunderland and West Hartlepool. William senior and sons John and William. There was also a younger brother Thomas who I think was also a shipbuilder. It is Thomas that interests me. Some of his children were born in London, so they must have moved there from Co.Durham. My dates are to say the least "vague and conflicting" but I have a birth certificate for Thomas for 1840, and I am reasonably certain that it is the correct one. He married Agnes DORAN who was Irish. They migrated to New Zealand in 1876, with the first 4 of their children and settled in Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty. Is there anyone on the list who can give me more information on this shipbuilding family? One source says that William senior's father was a glassmaker, while another claims the family was originaly from Rothbury in Northumberland and were farmers. Is there someone who might kindly look up the 1861 census for Monkwearmouth or Hartlepool or Sunderland. In about 1866 the Pile family shipbuilding business took a nose dive and John and possibly Thomas went to London, I think to Dulwich. PMT
I was at the FRC in London for a quick visit today, and coudn't find the 1841 census index for Monkwearmouth. Does anyone know the Volume, Folio number etc? I'm after Fulwell Lane area. edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton Anti-Virus 2003

Hello Listers I have hit a Brick wall on my family line, the person I am trying to find does not appear to be Registered or Baptised & yet his brothers & sisters pre 1837 have all been Baptised as I have the Baptisms, & the rest of the children after 1837 have all been Registered & Baptised, he was born around 1840, I find it odd that the parents would leave one of the children out & not Register or Baptise him, I have checked Registrations & Baptism,s in the Newcastle, Hetton & Sunderland area's were the family lived, According to the 1841 census he was aged 1 & the family lived in Hetton-le-hole but no luck. Has anybody else ever come across this?. Regards Allan Robson.

Hi Everybody I would be most obliged if there is anyone on the list who can help me to get out of this dead end. I am trying to trace the birth of one Matthew Carney. In the 1881 census he gives his birth place as Sunderland and his age as 26, living in Huddlestone Street Monkwearmouthshore. His marriage certificate in 1873 gives his age as 21 and his fathers name as Peter. His death certificate 1900 gives his age as 44. All this points to a birth date of around 1852-1856 I have searched the BMD indexes but cann,t find him. My request is, if anyone has access to the Sunderland 1861 and /or the 1871 census I would greatly appreciate a lookup for Matthew and/or Peter Carney. Hello all, It is some time since I posted here but a read the list avidly. I have just obtained the marriage cert of my G grandfather John William Collins, he married Isobel Ann Wright on 25 May 1896. His residence at the time of marriage was 12 Northumberland Place, Sunderland. Could anyone tell me where in Sunderland this was as I am unable to find it on any modern maps? Isobel, my G grandmother lived at 3 Long Bank at the time. At various times she has been listed a living at 3 Bowes Quay and 3 Low Quay. Is it possible that these were all the same place?
