Andrew - I think that your mother is referring to the church that is now called 'The United Reform Church'. Alan Vickers.
Does anyone know the name of a Scottish Church in Sidecliffe Road, Sunderland from the 1920's ? My grandmother keeps mentioning it, as a possible place for a marriage of a relation, but I cannot find what church she is talking about ? My grandparents were married at New Lodge Street, Prespertarian Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Are records for this church available anywhere. Tyne & Wear archives don't seem to have these. Cheers, Andrew

The marriage will be registered at Sunderland Register Office, from whom you can get a copy. I can find no reference to a 'New Lodge Street, Presbyterian Church' are you sure it is not North Bridge Street? Regards Stan Mapstone

The United Reform Church was formed in 1972 by the Congregational Church of England & Wales, and the Presbyterian Church of England. The Presbyterian Church of Scotland is a separate denomination. Hi Stan, Some interesting facts about early schoolmasters. I think Thomas may have been connected with the Methodist Church, so he may have taught in Sunday School there. It may be worth my while looking at Methdist records in Tyne and Wear Archives. Many thanks for your help. Regards, Margaret.

He could have been a Sunday School Teacher as these schools provided part time schooling for working children. There were also charity schools, which provided widespread elementary schooling for the poor. The main ones were the "British and Foreign School Society" and the "National Society for the Education of the Poor", their schools became known as the "National" and "British" schools. The first teacher training colleges were established in the 1840s, so properly qualified teachers were all but impossible to obtain. Regards Stan Mapstone
Tyne and Wear Archives have the Presbyterian Baptism records 1827-1837. Regards Stan Mapstone

I have photocopies of the following marriage certificates if they would help anybody:- Thomas BROWELL to Ada LANCASTER,St Peters Monkwearmouth 1955 John JacksonTONKINSON to Rita HIND, St Peter's 1954 George BAKER to Florence May CALLUM St Hilda's Sunderland 1927.
My g-grandfather, Thomas COLLING was born in Houghton in 1815. He married Mary WILSON (father STEPHEN) in Bishopwearmouth Church in 1840. Their place of abode on the marriage certificate was NEW TOWN. Would this be part of Sunderland or the beginnings of Washington New Town? In 1841, they were living in Houghton. The occupation of this same Thomas COLLING was listed in the 1851 census as coal miner and school master. I am presuming that this possibly meant teaching in a Sunday School. Any ideas on where to find details of such 'school masters'? Margaret.
Ann I found the following on the internet: it looks as if he was the son of Elizabeth Rogers, born about 1845; married either Ann Cavanagh or Dorothy Thompson in 1889; and had had two children, Elizabeth and Edward, by 1901. Not sure about his wife, though. Hope this helps. Hello A while ago Stan Mapstone told me that Wilfred COATES had premises in Sunderland. Unfortunately my HHD crashed and I lost the information before I could save that bit. The rest I had backed up. ( Be warned!! It shows the value of backing up info) Stan could you be good enough to repeat the info. Wlfred Coates & family Longwood Roker Park Road Roker 1901 census I went to Durham Records office to look the info up myself but it appears that the electoral rolls are kept at Sunderland as it used to be a Borough. Any other information you can give me re looking up businesses etc. would be most useful as I have not tried this route for info before and a few of my relatives had businesses. Thank you very much Tony Surtees tsurt@btinternet.com

It is just south of the market place to the west of the B1404, Seaham Road, which used to be called Blind Well Lane. You can use the Ordnance Survey Gazetteer at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/freefun/didyouknow/ Search for New Town and you will find it is now listed under Sunderland, click on the name and you will get a map which is just to the west of the exact location. You are about 120 years to soon for Washington New Town! Regards Stan Mapstone

Hello List, I am looking for a favour, if anyone is going to the local studies is Sunderland could they possibly look in the Electoral registers between 1892-1896 for 8 Flag Lane. The gentleman in question is John HUNTER ( There could be 2 of them). I have been trying to find out when he died but have been unable to tie up his age with the ones in St Cathrines Index.Hopefully I can tie up his departure from Flag Lane to his year of death. Is anyone researching Hercules Hunter and his wife Elizabeth in Monkwearmouth?. I have a copy of her death certificate which is not connected to my HUNTER family. Regards Ian Ridley Coventry
