I am trying to find George ARNETT and Emma BEAVER married living at 191 High Street West, Sunderland/Bishopwwearmouth where their daughter Lydia Mary Arnett was born in 1852. Lydia's birth and marriage (to Miles Abstemious PEARSON) show up in FreeBMD in 1852 and 1873 respectively. I have her certificates but I want to know more about her parents. George ARNETT came from East Harlsey in N Yorkshire but he seems to have been working as a draper in Sunderland in 1852. In 1881 George's brother John and Thomas were both widowered (?) and living at 1 Offerton Street, Sunderland, which is where Lydia was by 1901. She had been living in Borrowby near her father's birthplace and George dies there in 1887. I am happy to buy census fiche or CDs for 1851 and 1861 - which ones do I need and where can I buy them? I can't make out which fiche I need from the NDFS site. Geoff Pearson

Norma The easiest way I find is to check the GRO index, available at LDS centres & at main libraries in NZ, eg National Library, Porirua, Auckland etc. For some parts of the country The National Burial Index is available online (for a small fee), but I don't think Durham's covered - and I've mislaid the URL! Sorry! Listers On 5 March 1848, my ggg father, Joseph Michael SMITH, married Eliza Jane KIRTLEY in Monkwearmouth Parish Church. On 24 December 1849, in the same church, he married Ann CRAWFORD (my ggg mother), with the same minister and the same witnesses, and still as a bachelor - every detail, except the number, the date, the bride (and her father), is the same (including the handwriting). I can't see the death of Eliza Jane SMITH in the intervening period: could it be that the first marriage was annulled, hence his continued bachelor status and the absence of her death? If so, what would the grounds, procedure and documentation for the annulment be? Would she have reverted to her maiden name? I find it difficult to believe that all three of the minister and the witnesses could have overlooked the groom's earlier marriage, less than two years before - though I suppose the minister could have mistranscribed his condition on the second certificate. All theories, explanations etc gratefully received! Mike Mellor Wellington, NZ

I am looking for the family of Francis Joseph Nee, born India around 1860. In 1901, he was married to Mary, born in Ireland around 1860, and had a son named Francis Joseph Nee, born in Durham Grangetown around 1895. I am assuming that Francis married Mary around 1894, because in 1891 he was not married yet. I would appreciate any information on how to obtain more information on this family. All I have is what the 1901 census states. This family lived at 7 Sea View, Ryhope. The Ecclesiastical Parish was St Pauls Ryhope. Has anyone come across a Nee family in the County of Durham? Past or Present? I look forward to hearing from you. I am making this query on behalf of a friend. Can any one tell me if "Etterick Buildings" North Hylton, Sunderland, could have been known by a different name or address. There is no reference to this address in the 1901 census My friend has obtained the birth certificate for her grandfather "Charles Taylor" born April 29th 1901 The place of birth was given as "Etterick Buildings" North Hylton, Co Durham. I have trawled through the 1901 census with her, there is no record of this address. On the 1871 census its "Etterick Hall Buildings", It's in the Castletown area "Charles Taylor" was baptized in the Parish of Castletown on May 29th 1901 his father was "Joseph Taylor" and mother "Eleanor Ann" (formally "Padgett") Trying to find the birth place of "Joseph" and "Eleanor Ann" ! Thankyou Carole Robinson
