Malcolm Thanks to a number of folks on the list, I found St Lukes Road where my grandfather lived in 1901 (he was 8), and it is right next to Pallion Rd., so it might be the same Alf. Did your Alf have a brother Cuthbert? Did he ever mention George Paxton who lived in Glasgow, who was his best friend? Was your Alf in the merchant navy? edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks
The ONS (GRO) do not have the original Marriage Registers, what they have are certified copies of the Registers held by the local Registrar. Some local Registrars do provide photocopies of the original registers, and I have several from the Sunderland Registrar which do have the original handwriting of the participants. Regards Stan Mapstone
Hello John, You do not say where the marriage took place or where you obtained the copies of the certificates from. According to a book I have, few marriage entries at the General Register Office contain original signatures of brides, grooms and witnesses. You should therefore approach the superintendent registrar or the minister of the church or chapel where the marriage took place to see whether he will consult the records for you. Many Anglican registers have been microfilmed, in which case the signatures are easy to check yourself. Hope this helps! Heidi
I have trawled my 1890's maps, but can't find it, nor is it on Streetmap. Is there someone who could possibly help? It's where my family were living in 1901. TIA edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks
Best of the New Year to everyone. I'm hoping the Brains Trust on this list may be able to steer me in the right direction, if there is one that is. I have g-g-grandfather, Robert William Crickmore (also know as William Robert in his earlier years) who was born in Suffolk but moved to Sunderland as a young man. He married a local girl Christen Stuart in 1862. They had several children. In the 1871 census Christen is home with the children, but no Robert William. In the 1881 census, she is at home, with the kids, but under a different surname (I was able to find them through one of the girl's names, Lena, which isn't that common) Robert William worked his way up to Master Mariner and got around a bit, being the Master of the Mary Ann Annison and the Mary Ann Jamison. We have the Lloyds information on that, and there weren't any other Robert William Crickmore's who were Masters. On some of his trips he came to Sydney, in the 1870's. In November 1879 a Robert William Crickmore married Mary Smith, in the then Colony of Victoria. According to the copy of the marriage registry book he was from Sunderland. There is also the registration of the birth of a daughter to Robert William and Mary in January 1881. I've matched the signature of Robert William Crickmore of the Mary Ann Annison & Mary Ann Jamison, on the copies of the Crew & Passenger Listings, with the signature of Robert William Crickmore in the marriage registry, so I know they are the same person. The trick is linking him back to the Robert William Crickmore, married to Christen Stuart in Sunderland. We're 99% sure it's the same person but we looking for the actual evidence to prove it. After looking through the copies of the marriage certificates for Robert William and his brother Henry, where he was a witness, I now realise that the names of the groom, bride & witnesses are written in by someone else (the local Registrar?) I was hoping that they were the same as the early Victorian registry entries where the people sign the book, so I could match the signatures with the one on the Crew & Passenger Listings and the Victorian Registry book. My question is, is there any record that is accessible today by any means that has the parties to a wedding signatures, or perhaps other documents that might have a person's signature? Many Thanks in Advance John Crickmore Canberra, Australia
Hello, Dorothy ARTER was born on 3 March 1932 in Durham but her birth does not appear on the GRO indexes. Her mother was a RAINE but no ARTER/RAINE marriage appears in the indexes either before of after 1932, or any other ARTER children with RAINE for the mother. Has anyone ideas as to how I can find her fathers forename? Bert Arter, Stibbard, Norfolk, England Researching ARTER, BONE, GAGE, LANGLEY, WIDOWSON and many others

Hello All! I am interested in any information regarding the above manufacturers. I believe that Thomas USHER born 1850 (one of my ancestors) may be the same Thomas USHER of REAY & USHER, according to CHRISTIE's Directory 1871/2, Thomas resided at Ford Villa, South Hylton and was an Ironmaster in WARD'S Directory of 1877 Thomas resided at Hylton Forge and he is listed under REAY & USHER Iron Manufacturers. According to the Return of Owners of Land 1873, Thomas USHER of South Hylton, owned 2 acres with an estimated Rental of £165 15s. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Heidi

I have recently been given my grandfather's photos, and in these are a number of his great friend Alf BELL and his family including his brother Cuthbert and his mother, with possibly some other members of their family. I'm trying to separate out Alf's family from my own, as there are a number of photos of both of the families together, and I just wondered whether anyone on the list is searching for this family. I'd happily pass on a CD of any pics of interest to a family member. edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks

Does anyone have information on William Hall and his wife Mary Walton? The 1881 British census shows William Hall as a widower, a master butcher, born about 1827 in Sunderland, and living at 36 South Street, Crossgate, in Durham, England, in 1881. His wife, Mary Walton of Weardale, had a brother William Walton, who emigrated to Illinois in the 1850s. William Walton's obituary lists his place of birth as Stanhope. Mary and William Hall had 4 children, all born in Sunderland: my grandfather William John Hall (born 1854), Joseph Walton Hall, Edwin Hall, and Clara Ann. Clara married William Thornton and lived at 36 South Street, Durham; all three brothers moved to the United States. With all the recent Hall inquiries, I thought I should add my questions to the list. Any help you can send would be appreciated. Thanks. M. A. Linden
