    2. Colin Nichol
    3. Can anyone help with information about Michael Doherty (Docherty). He is the father of Alice and Rose. Both of them were christened Doherty but changed their names to Docherty as they got older. Apparently, Michael Doherty died around about 1922 or 1923 in Northumberland. I have visited the Family History Centre and checked www.1837online.com but there is no record of his death. Also researching John William Lincoln of Sunderland, born 1922, died 1992. Regards. 3. Hello Listers If there is anyone out there with transcripts / access to the Sedgefield Parish Registers I would GREATLY appreciate it if they could check c.1827 for the baptism of Hannah Ella CLOSE, parents James Close and Margaret (maiden name suspected to be NEWTON). Hannah always gave Houghton-le-Spring on censuses etc but I think I have found one brother, Joseph Ralph CLOSE, baptised at St Michaels HLS 23 March 1824 and another, Robert CLOSE, bap 26 Nov 1825 in Sedgefield so I thought it worth checking the Sedgefield registers for Hannah. Many thank Lee Melbourne Australia

    3. I would like to find my Thompson family in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. I have the following addresses/dates and have been looking without success through microfilms of the Sunderland census. Can anyone tell me if these addresses would have been considered to be in Sunderland or Bishopwearmouth for census purposes at these times? The addresses are as recorded in birth or marriage certificates or (1881 & 1901) censuses. Thanks for any help. 1842 - John Street, Sunderland 1866 - 41 Wear Street, Sunderland 1868 - 56 Wear Street, Sunderland 1881 - 8 Avon Street, Bishopwearmouth 1901 - 42 Hendon Street, Hendon Ian Thompson

    3. Hi all. I posted a message a while ago about an ancestor of mine, William Carney, born Monkwearmouth, about 1814. I have now found the full name of his wife, Mary Leigh, born about 1817, Sunderland. >From the age of their first child (on 1851 census) they must have married in about 1833. Does anyone have access to any local parish registers where these two could have married in probably Monkwearmouth, or maybe Sunderland. Thanks David Hodgson-Brown

Hi Ian, they all appear to be in Bishopwearmouth. The Sunderland Parish started at Russell Street-Sans Street, then ran parallel to Coronation Street to just past Flag Lane, then down Coronation Street and along Adelaide Place to the docks. The streets you list were all outside this area. Sunderland Parish was only 220 acres, and Bishopwearmouth 9,225 acres. Regards Stan Mapstone

    2. Hello all. Just been looking through the Post Office Directory Northumberland and Durham 1858 and came across the following. East Cross street (from136 High Street to West Wear Street) 1&2 Minerva Hotel . John SWAIN. He is also listed under the heading of Publican and as an Insurance agent for Briton Life. Does anyone have further info on the place ? Is there enough info here for a census search of any kind.? I have a Brady Swain with his family in Bishopwearmouth in 1881 ,he is 35 ,so he may appear with John. The Copy of Brady's marriage certificate gives a John as his father . Any info appreciated. When it meets Chester Road it becomes Ormonde Street which is then Barnes Park Road after it crosses Mount Road, When it comes to Durham Road it becomes Alexander Road all the way to Grangetown. This is the 'RING Road" I believe the same names still applty today,Betty.

    2. John Crickmore
    3. Heidi, thanks for the information. The UK certificates are from the GRO. The two marriages that I'm interested in are: Robert William Crickmore & Christen Stuart - 25 Nov 1862, at the Parish Church, Bishopwearmouth, and Henry Crickmore & Harriet Ann Edwards - 30 Oct 1865, at the Parish Church, Monkwearmouth. I was thinking that there might be church records to check, but I wasn't sure whether the local registry records would have the bride's, groom's & witnesses' signatures. I'll have to get onto the Sunderland Registry Office and see what I can find out. Cheers John Crickmore Canberra, Australia > Hello John, > > You do not say where the marriage took place or where you obtained the > copies of the certificates from. > > According to a book I have, few marriage entries at the General Register > Office contain original signatures of brides, grooms and witnesses.
