Hello to all on the list. I don't know Sunderland at all and wondered if you could tell me where a person who died in Bishopwearmouth between 1891 and 1901 would have been buried? I looking for the grave of Elizabeth Payne, Born abt 1831. Are there any burial records on line for the area I wonder? Also would Tatham Street have been classed as in Bishopwearmouth? I have looked on the old 1861 map of Sunderland but as I don't know the area I am unsure. All, I sent this e-mail this morning from home but it does not appear to have arrived, so I am sending it again from work. I apologise if anyone receives it twice. Good Morning, I apologise in advance for this being so long, but I have realised from recent postings to other lists if you only give half the information, you can only expect half answers, so here goes. My GGGrandmother was born Jane Worthy on 27 Sep 1852, daughter of William Worthy and Sarah Worthy formerly Kirkbride on Victoria Street Southwick. On 15 Jun 1874 she married Robert Chapman he of 12 Paley Street aged 21 a glass cutter, she of 36 Cumberland Street Bishopwearmouth aged 22. The birth certificate of their first daughter gives Elizabeth Hannah Chapman born 9 Dec 1874 at Hawthorn Street Monkwearmouth to Robert Chapman A flint glass cutter and Jane Chapman formerly Worthy. The 1881 Piece 4990 Folio 84 Page 72 for 18 Cornwall Street Bishopwearmouth gives Robert Chapman sheet glass cutter aged 28, Jane Chapman wife aged 27, Elizabeth Chapman aged 6 plus 3 other children. The 1891 Piece 4130 Folio 91 Page 69 for 17 Alfred Street Bishopwearmouth gives Robert Chapman brilliant glass cutter {he was obviously getting good at it by now ;) } aged 38, Jane Worthy aged 36, Elizabeth Chapman aged 16 plus 9 other children. Finally her death certificate dated 5 Jun 1898 for 16 Oswald Street gives age 46 years wife of Robert Chapman Glass cutter. Now my questions, I know her age varies from document to document by up to two years, but that does not seem uncommon for the time, however the constant changes of address does seem peculiar. Can anyone tell me whether it was common at this time for people to move house on such a regular basis? Also the last document I received was their marriage certificate and that threw up one strange thing, her father on the marriage certificate is Robert Worthy a carpenter on her birth certificate it was William Worthy a ship wright, could these people be the same, maybe he was a Robert William Worthy or a William Robert Worthy or could this be a marriage of another Robert Chapman glass cutter to another Jane Worthy? If you've read this far, thank you and any help hints or advice will be gratefully received. Thanks Richard

Hi Lesley, Probably in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, on Chester Road. There are also Sunderland Cemetery, on Ryhope Road, at Grangetown, and Mere Knolls Cemetery in Fulwell. Tatham Street is in Bishopwearmouth. I don't know of any records on line but TWAS have records, see http://www.thenortheast.com/archives/UserGuides/01_Cemeteries.html Regards Stan Mapstone

Hello All. Thanks to yet more fantastic help from one of the list i now know that this hotel was closed and reported to the Compensation Authority during WW2. Anybody able to supply further details of this incident? Would this have been a results of damage sustained during bombing of Sunderland? My interest is due to this hotel being run by John Swain ,at least in 1857/58 ,according to an advert placed in Wards directory of the time. I don't know how lng he lasted there as i have members of his family elsewhere later on. One of particular interest to me is Brady Swain. Colin Notman

I am seeking the birth of William Robertson, father John Robertson, mother Margaret Maven between 1864 and 1868 born in Durham. I purchased a birth certificate registered South Shields for the 1st Qtr 1864 but it did not prove to be correct. The family moved around a little and was in Berwick then Jarrow then Sunderland. I am presuming these are close by. Are they all separate registration districts? Lorraine Knott

I am trying to find information about: John Locke (born 1851) and wife Ellen (born 1852) who died after 1901 in Sunderland. He was born in Hampshire and She in Essex. I have an address from 1901 census which was 59, Tatham Street,Sunderland . He was a professional snooker player so I am wondering if any local papers carried reports of matches or if his name appears in any halls, pubs etc. They had several children Minnie, Laura, Arthur, Ethel, Nellie, Rose, Mabel,Amy, Lillian and Alec (Alexander). Alec was a great grandfather so we know about him but little of the others. So if any one recognises any of these names and has any information I would love to hear from them. Hi Listers, The recent postings about Sunderland Churches has prompted me to ask about what the the IGI refers to as 'Old Meeting or Corn Market Chapel'. The registers for that Church record my HALLS (John Hay 1822, William 1824, John 1828, George 1832, Jane Porteous 1835, and Isabella 1836) I suspect their parents, William and Christian, were maried there but I cannot find any reference to marriages or burial registers. Does anyone know of the Church and its history? Would the mariages and burials have been recorded elsewhere or have gone unrecorded? Any information would be much apprecited, as would contact from anyone who's lines might spring from the HALLs, HAYs FORTUNES or PORTEOUSs in Sunderland. John Newton Kyme
Hi All, (I hope this isn't too large of a message) I posted the following heads of households a couple of years ago to this list. I have ADDED a few more. My life is such that I can continue to help with these entries for now. I still have more entries, (if the list would like me to continue) from the 1891 Census, for Bishopwearmouth, & Henden Durham. If you are interested in any of the surnames (listed below), & would like the entire entry, let me know privately at: laurieloodles@hotmail.com. INCLUDE THE NUMBER that is listed at the beginning of your surname, & the piece number listed at the beginning of each section of names. ! I have to have this number to find the entry for you. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR QUERIES TO 2 PER PERSON! I DON'T have the entire Census, so PLEASE DON'T ask for names I haven't listed. If the entry I send you is your family, I have them burned to a disk, so I have the images available to send to you if you would like.
