    1. [SUNDERLAND] Look-up 1861 or 1871 Census Sunderland
    2. Sue
    3. Hello everyone! I wonder if anyone may be able to help me? I am looking for the following:- Edward GRAHAM (born 1855/56 - South Hetton, Co. Durham. I believe he may have been in the Sunderland area at the time of the 1861 Census (aged 4/5) and the 1871 Census (aged 14/15). If anyone has access to these Census sheets, has the time, and would be willing to look these up for me, I would really really appreciate it. I know Edward is listed on the 1881 Census, as a married man but I have no information at all on his parents, possible brothers, sisters etc, before 1881. I have searched in vain on the Durham and Easington Census - but to no avail. Many thanks for reading this. Regards Susannah

    1. [SUNDERLAND] Pallion Institute
    2. Ben Revell
    3. I've found an old photograph at my Mothers. Its the Pallion Institute football team 1910/11. Its 20cm x 15cm and is on a card backing. Unfortunately the bottom half of the card is torn. All I can make out is "Pallion In....." the rest missing and under that "Nonconformist......" However the team has a football in front of them with "PIAFC 1910-11" Its a pity are no names of the people pictured, but one has a very remarkable family likeness and may be my Grandfather. My mother recalls nothing about the photo has my fathers Mother & Father had already died when they met. I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on the "Pallion Institute" of this period. Ben p.s. If anyone would like a copy I can scan it and forward it. ==================================================== http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ben.revell1/Revell.html

    1. [SUNDERLAND] Gowland watch maker
    2. Trevor Lace
    3. My name is Trevor Lace and I collect old pocket watches and research the makers as the history of some of them is fantastic. One of the best watches I have was made in Sunderland by a watch maker called Gowland, details to follow. The watch was made 1807 and is still in perfect working order aprox 197 years old all hand made, this is a watch maker to be proud off. Details I have. George Gowland Born 1759 was working Hylton Ferry Sunderland 1779 to 1790 George Gowland of Sunderland. This Gowland was the son of clockmaker Clement Gowland 1757 - 1824, he was born 1782. he was recorded as a Clockmaker, Watchmaker, Jeweler and Silversmith, working in the High Street. he died in 1829 left a widow called Ann. George Hay Gowland. This maker was the Son of Clement 1791 - 1860 and was born in 1829 he also was a watchmaker, jeweler and silversmith he worked at 178 High Street at least the 1860 1884 period. he took over the shop on his father's death and was in partnership with his brother Clement from 1860 to 1873. I can find a trading reference to them as Gowland G.H. & C of Sunderland in 1854. In 1881 census, George H was living at 3 Ashbrook Terrace, Bishopwearmouth, Durham and his occupation as silversmith & jeweler, he was living there with his wife Mary age 55 and his children Mary Elizabeth 26. Jane C 22. Clement 21, a jewelers assistant. George H 18 a jewelers assistant and Charles J 17. a jewelers assistant. He also had a cook and a housemaid. The British Horological Institute have several papers written by Gowland in their museum. If anyone could help with any other details on the Family Gowland it would be very much appreciated. I am not from the Sunderland area and therefore lack local knowledge. Trevor Lace

    1. Re: [SUNDERLAND] My Research List
    2. Douglas Brown
    3. Hi Helen, Thanks for the quick reply. The info is excellent. I've already found the 14yo son John and his family in the 1881 census, living in James Armitage Street. There is a definite connection with that street & Carley Road as they both keep popping up. It's also interesting that John Lamb is shown as Son in Law & unmarried! As for the son George, they did have one with that name and the year & place of birth and occupation are the same. He was married to a woman named Mary but the info I have suggests that she was born in Shields (presumably S. Shields) and was three years younger than him (Freebmd: Marriage Sunderland Dist Dec Qtr 1858 & 1881 Census: RG11 5003/81 91). However, if the daughter, Elizabeth A. was born in 1856 then that marriage registration may not be the same one. I'll have to do some more checking. I look forward to your next instalment. Douglas

    3. Listers A possible relative of mine, William CRAWFORD, is listed in the IGI as being christened at both Bridge Road-Scotch Church Presbyterian and North Bridge Presbyterian Church in Monkwearmouth on 18 Nov 1832. Can anyone confirm that these references would be to the same church, and if so which its more usual name would be? Thanks. Mike Mellor Wellington, NZ

    3. The entry in the book "Buildings and Beliefs by Tom Corfe and Geoffrey Milburn, published by Wearside Historic Churches Group in 1984, reads: "1891, by W L Newcombe. The most striking Gothic church north of the river, its tall slender spire surmounted by a weathercock. Decorated nave. Originally Free Church of Scotland, replacing a plain Classical building of 1827." Alan Vickers.
