    3. Hi Bev, strangely enough I checked my spreadsheet for the 1871 census and I had the entry you were interested in. I had noted all the ROSS entries when I went through the 1871 a few years ago. The family were living at 18 North Quay East, Monkwearmouth Ecclesiastical District: St Peters Piece RG10/5025 Unfortunately this search was undertaken in the early days of my research, so I don't have the folio and page number details. Name, Relationship to Head, Married or single, age, occupation, place of birth Alexander ROSS Head Mar 34 Engine Driver Scotland Anne ROSS Wife Mar 31 monkwearmouth Alexander (James) ROSS Son 6 Sunderland George Andrew ROSS Son 4 monkwearmouth Thomas ROSS Son 1 Sunderland Matthew Liddle ROSS monkwearmouth (don't have his age for some reason) I still have a feeling our ROSS interests may end up linked somewhere along the line. bfn Diane R Sunderland UK Don & Bev Froom <okfrooms@shaw.ca> wrote: Hello members! Can anyone tell me the area these two addresses might have been? Also does anyone have access to the 1871 census which should show an George Andrew ROSS age 4, son of Alexander James, and Anne ROSS. 3. Must thank everyone who responded to my last request. I now have the information from the 1871 Census which gives the age of my Great Grandfather and also that he was born in Scotland. I am now looking for the area of # 26 east St. Sunderland which is the address given on the 1901 census for my grandfather living with my mother age 6 and her two siblings James and Amy. I would really appreciate being able to pin point the whereabouts of this address on the map. Thanks again everyone. Bev Froom

    3. Hi Elizabeth & list, Unfortunately, my SCOTT (maternal) line doesn't appear to be the same as yours. That's one of the problems with having a popular surname. The only info. I have is from a marr. cert. of my maternal gt.g/parents, William SCOTT (age 21) who was listed as a stoker, & his father who was also shown as William SCOTT an engineer. His bride was a Rachael SCOTT (age 18) & her father was also shown as William SCOTT a labourer. Both are shown as residing in Low Quay (no street shown). Their witness's are shown as Alice SCOTT & George HUGALL (that's what it looks like). The cert. shows they were married on 1881-Dec-26 in the Parish Church (which I was told was/is Holy Trinity) Sunderland It's not much, but, hopefully someone on the list can assist us in filling in some missing blanks. 3. Stan, I was interested to read about this street.[St Bede's Terrace I knew-went to a dentist there for what is now called orthodontic treatment!] My maternal Grandmother used to have women's meetings for the local women at Dock Street Methodist Church. I have a photo of her outside the church with some of the women.Betty.

    1. Re: [SUNDERLAND] Ship Inn
    2. In 1928, when Southwick was incorporated into Sunderland the pubs came under the town's Licensing Authorities. At the Brewster Sessions in 1929 the Chief Constable opposed the renewal of three Southwick licences, one of these was for the Ship Inn at 1 Collin Place. The Bench agreed that the three licences be reported for compensation, resulting in the pubs being closed down. Regards Stan Mapstone
