Just today I found my Savage family in Sunderland: James and Annie (Cooper) Savage married in 1890 in Milngavie, Scotland Elizabeth Catherine (my Grandmother) James Alice Andrew All the above born in Scotland Annie born in Sunderland in 1901 (she was less than a month old at the time of the 1901 census) He worked as a Foreman dock fitter. The family eventually (within a few years) went to Simonstown, South Africa with Sir John Jackson, Ltd. where James worked the same job with the dry dock project there. My question is does anyone know what companies where in Sunderland that used dock fitters? Did Sir John Jackson have an office there? ( I know he had one in London). Also did sailing ships, maybe mail ships, leave Sunderland to South Africa? I am still trying to find passenger lists for the family. Thanks so much, Karen Glendora, CA

John Alex Kennedy was at 42-43-44-45 High Street West. By 1914 he also had 46 & 47. The building was the Cobden Exchange, which was burnt down in 1904 and rebuilt. It stood next to the Rose & Crown which was on the corner of Gill Bridge Avenue. Both Buildings were demolished to make way for the inner ring road. Andrew Share was at 2 Suffolk Street. I could find none of them in the 1894 Directory. I hope this helps. Regards Stan Mapstone

Nelson Street appears on the 1960-1969 map and Kipling Street on the 1970-1979 map. It looks as though Nelson Street was demolished and Kipling Street built in its place. Regards Stan Mapstone

Hi Lee, Do you have John Kirby born Burdon 1822 wife Elizabeth born Whitburn 1838. Children Alfred,Thomas, Frances, William, Elizabeth, George. I dont know where Sarah is but at a good guess I would say she was his first wife and died young because the first child of John and Elizabeth was born in 1862 when he was forty. I also found a Mark Kirby born in Burdon in1831 if that is any help. Regards Dawn

Hi Stan and Val, I also subscribe to the Clwyd list (among others) and there have numerous reports that any messages associated with Rootsweb are being 'bounced' by AOL, presumably in an attempt to avoid spam etc. This happens regularly and when someone at Rootsweb contacts AOL to explain that Rootsweb in not involved with spam, messages are allowed through . . . until the next time. Maybe a similar thing is happening with you Val; like Stan I have no recollection of your postings. I would love to know if anyone can help me with information about the McLeod and Fulton families of Monkwearmouth, Bishopwearmouth, Durham City, Sunderland, and that general area. I live in Australia, but used to live in Bootle, Merseyside. I have, with the help of others, traced my family back to my great great grandfather, Stephen McLeod, B C1796) paper maker, who appears to have lived in Bishopwearmouth. He was deceased when his son George Reuben (B1833) was married in September, 1862 to Elizeabeth (correct spelling) Fulton(B18. also of Bishopwearmouth. Her father was Joseph Fulton, a joiner. Any information which would help me get even further back into the history of my ancesters or help me to find other descendants who may still live in the area would be very much appreciated. Regards, Liz Coulthard
