Hi Patrick, Tunstall was a Township in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, so the parish church was St. Michael and All Angels. Civil Registration has nothing to do with religion, every marriage of whatever religion, as well as civil marriages, had to be registered. The township of Tunstall was only 808 acres and the population in 1821 was only 64, and in 1831 was only 75, but by 1901 it was 5,400 due to the development of New Silksworth, part of which was in Tunstall. If you go to _http://www.tomorrows-history.com/_ (http://www.tomorrows-history.com/) you can view maps of the area for various dates. There were at least two farms including Tunstall Hills Farm and Elstob House. Tunstall is mentioned in the Boldon Book of 1183, the name means simply 'the farmstead'. Regards Stan Mapstone
Hello, everyone -- I'm looking for the birth or baptism record of one Jane Dagg, born in 1827. Per her marriage record, she was the daughter of George Dagg; per a Monkwearmouth marriage record, her mother may have been called Jane Tate. In later records, Jane Dagg gave her place of birth as Sunderland, Tunstall, and Tunstall Hill. It seems the best move would be to write to the Durham County Record Office and ask them to look through the parish register of Holy Trinity, Sunderland. If she was from Tunstall Hill, would this be the best parish to try, or should I try another? Her marriage in 1851 is in the GRO records, so it seems likely she'd be Church of England. I wonder if some of you might be able to tell me more about the area -- how large it is, where it is exactly, what it's like. I see there's a Tunstall Road in the southwestern part of the city center, and there seems to be a Tunstall-ish area bounded on the northeast by Queen Alexandra Road, northwest by Tunstall Road, southwest by Leechmeere, and southeast by Helvellyn Road. Is this the right region? Also, what might be my chances of finding Jane in Sunderland in the 1841 census? Many thanks in advance for your wisdom! Patrick S. Philadelphia, Pa., USA

In an LDs film I saw yesterday there is a Roll of Church Members of the Dundas St Independent. Unfortunately, the page I'm interested in doesn't indicate what dates they are referrring to but I found this man: Mr Robert Young shipwright Weir St - removed to Middlesex (that is what it looks like). I' m making a stab at the date (from preceding and following pages) that this could be the 1830s. I was hoping someone might have easy access to Directories around that time and could look up Robert Young shipwright for me. I would be most grateful. Hi Geraldine, It should be Wear Street. You can search directories on line at Digital Library of Historical Directories _http://www.historicaldirectories.org/_ (http://www.historicaldirectories.org/) but Robert Young will not be listed unless he had his own business, ordinary householders are not listed. Hi Maxine Sunderland Road, Southwick appears on the 1891 census without any numbers. The reference is RG12/4147 Folios 21-22. Unfortunately, there weren't any Butlers or Smiles in the 8 houses shown as Sunderland Road, Southwick. Do you have any first names and ages to go with the surnames? Regards Alison
hello everyone. I am new to the list and my surname interests are BUTLER and SMILES both families were in the area of Southwick. I have information from the 1901 census and from birth certificates identifying that houses No 1 and No 6 Sunderland Road, Southwick were occupied by these families. I am hoping sks may have access to the 1891 census and would be willing to do a look-up at the addresses above. Thankyou regards Maxine Gardner --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi, Would some SKS be able to do a llokup for me in Church records for Wilfred Southern possibly born in 1917. (According to WW2 Records) Family suggests he was born in 1919 as Collings. I have found a Wilfred Collings born in st Catherines Index in 1919, but no 1919, Collings or Southern which might be appropriate. I dont know of any church records that I can look at from here. Any help greatly received Thanks Ruth Canberra, Australia
My Maternal grandmother was a member of a Temperance Union-I have her mediallion-this would be in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Genealogy research found the explanation for reasons I came from a Tee-Total family! Re your Norwegian connection-keep digging!-It took me 7 years to 'prove' a family story re a name change because someone ran away from home to be a jockey and changed his name! Betty.
Hello all. One of the stories my wifes paternal grandmother told was of a connection to Norway by way of a marriage. Nothing in my research until recently had revealed any such thing.I am back to the late 1700's. Then yesterday i had a stroke of luck on FreeBMD .One of grandma's sisters born 1879 in Sunderland who i had previosly found in 1881 and 1901 was on their list.Instead of just Fanny W Swain it had her full title of Fanny Wigdahl Swain. Now is this the hint of a connection? Some research has suggested that the name is at least of Scandinavian origin. So here is the family verbal history. Some one in the family either of COWLEY or SWAIN parentage, possibly, and a male some how got "ensnared" by the daughter of a Norwegian "priest " who was engaged within the temperance movement. The father ,allegedly came over with the Norwegian fishing fleets fishing fleets. We had always thought that the name Swain might have come from Swainson or Svenson but that does not appear to be true. Fanny's sister, grandma, was called Mary Cowley Swain so some evidence of previous family names used as christian names. Father to the girls is a Brady Swain and mother Jemima nee Cowley. I have found her father George an Iron Founder on the 1881 census and also his marriage on FreeBMD. He seems to have married a Mary Turnbull in 1846. Can anyone shed any light on any of the above ? Does any one have any knowledge of when the temperance movement was in full swing? Any one any connection to the above? Loads of questions ,hope to get some answers!!! Colin Notman

I found this interesting entry for Sunderland on the Vision of Britain Through Time site http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/index.php Sunderland LA is in the North East region, with a 2001 population of 280,807. Two hundred years ago in 1801; it contained 29,704 people which rose to 81,246 in 1851 and 261,924 in 1911. Today, 15.59% of the population is over 65 and 25.47% under 20, but in 1851 these percentages were 4.05% and 46.50%. Today, the service industry is the largest sector of the local economy, employing 69.23% workers, while in 1841 25.64% worked in manufacturing. In 1931 Male unemployment was 29.2%, 22.7% in 1991 and 10.4% in 2001 Today, 49% of women work outside the home, or want to, but in 1931 only 23.8% did. In 1931, 8.5% of male workers had middle class jobs -- now 36.2% do. In 1951, 24.06% of households lacked their own toilet. By 2001 this had dropped to under 0.23%. 97.22% of households had central heating, a bath/shower and a toilet. Roughly 53.7% of children aged 5 to 14 went to school in 1851 (52.6% nationally). Today, 69% of 16 and 17 year olds stay on at school (76.9% nationally). Today, 9.6% of people claim no religion, 81.48% describe themselves as Christian. In 1851, the census asked how many of each kind of Christian went to church: 35.60% were other religions Regards Stan Mapstone
