A search for Albert Bristow brings up none in the Sunderland Area, so the name is probably wrongly transcribed. You can do a wild card search yourself at https://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ If you have an idea of his age it will help as you can specify an age in 1901 +/- 5 years. There is a birth Albert Bristow registered in the December 1/4 1881 in Middlesbrough on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ You could search for your grandmother and see if she is listed, and if it was in Middlesbrough as well that could be him, if so he would be 20 in 1901 and 37 in 1918. I have a letter written in 1918 to my g'mother in Canada from her brother in Sunderland - his name Albert Bristow. The return address on the letter was 18 John St, Hylton, Sunderland. I'm not sure how to go about finding info on him...does anyone have any suggestions? He mentioned a wife and daughter but no names. He stayed in Engl. but my g'mother and her sisters were sent to Canada as home children. The letter is the only clue we have since most of the family has passed on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda S.
Hello All Would someone have a copy of the above & look for a John Robson & his wife Eleanor, they are not on the 1861 Census & I know they were in Sunderland up to 1856, John Robson died in 1862 while living in Tweed St, so I assume he was living somewhere in Sunderland in 1861. Hope someone can help. Regards Allan Robson
Hi Allan, Until 1867 Electoral Registers only included male owners and tenants of larger properties as a property qualification was needed in order to vote. The land had to be worth at least £10 a year, provided that they had been in occupation for at least 12 months, paid poor rate and assessed taxes, and lived within seven miles of the borough. In 1861 census, the total population of Sunderland Parliamentary Borough was 82,474, but the electorate in 1859 was only 2,729, so unless John Robson came into the above category, he will not appear, and his wife certainly won't. <<<<In a message dated 31/05/2004 03:09:55 GMT Daylight Time, marjimnz@xtra.co.nz writes: Was there an area called Spring Garden? >>>> Hi Jim, The names were originally Spring Gardens and Covent Gardens, Spring Garden Lane, and Covent Garden Lane were built in 1822. Before 1780 most of the area was open fields and gardens, but between 1770 and 1830 increased prosperity led to the building of much new property. Regards Stan Mapstone
Spring Garden Lane ran between High Street and Coronation Street. To the west was George Street and to the East Flag Lane. Regards Stan Mapstone

Hello, I would be gratefull if someone could look-up "Joseph Taylor" and "Eleanor Ann Padget" on the 1891 census please My friend has obtained the birth certificate for her grandfather "Charles Taylor" born April 29th 1901 The place of birth was given as "Etterick Buildings" North Hylton, Monkwearmouth, Durham. We have searched the 1901 census twice at our local Archives, but there is no record of this address. On the 1871 census it is "Etterick Hall Buildings", it's in the Castletown area of Sunderland, Durham. "Charles Taylor" was baptized in the Monkwearmouth Parish on May 29th 1901, his father was "Joseph Taylor" and mother "Eleanor Ann" (formally "Padgett") "Joseph" and "Eleanor Ann" had quite a few children before "Charles", some of the names were Charlott, Elizabeth, and Ethel ! Trying to find the birth place of "Joseph" and "Eleanor Ann" ! Shortly after "Charles" was born the family moved to Chester-le-street, Durham Thankyou Carole Robinson

If anyone has access to 1851 &1861 Censuses for Bishopwearmouth Sunderland I wonder if they would be kind enough to look up any ADCOCKS/ADCOOKS living there at the time. I found a reference to Sans St. if that is any help. I am also looking for CONLAN (any variation) who may have been living in Bishopwearmouth Sunderland in the same period. I think Albert St. is a possibility for them. I should be most grateful for any help TIA Tessa
I am researching on my maternal side for a Margaret HODGSON born about 1830, probably at North Shields, Durham. I only have a marriage certificate dated 5 August 1849, at Hetton-le-Hole, Margaret a spinster had no age on the certificate, nothing about 'full age' or 'minor' etc. her father William was sailor. She married Edmund TIPLADY born 1826, Reeth, Yorkshire, of full age, Pitman, his father was John a common carrier. Witness to the wedding were John Rueben Bell and George Emmerson. They had children Jane born 1850, John born 1852 and William Hodgson born 1858. I am descended from Jane TIPLADY born 1850 who married in 1871 in the USA to Samuel WILE, they both came to Australia, and are at rest in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Do you know of my Margaret HODGSON? Regards Ernie Davis. ernied1@bigpond.com

I am new to list and want to inquire whether there are any Mayhews in the area. My ggrandmaother was Eleanor Mayhew and I believe her father and mother were William and Isabel. My ggreatgrandmother married a Edwin Morris Jordan from Wales when they met in the U.S.A around 1880. Their children were Margaret, Edwin, William, Kate, Isabel. In a book written by their daughter Isabel when she was around 90, she states that her father was from Cardiff Wales, and her mother was from Sunderland, England. Any Mayhews out there that might connect? would enjoy hearing from someone. Suzanne, in Gloucester, Virginia, U.S.A.
