    1. Occupation help
    2. I have just received a couple of GRO Certificates, that are a little illegible in places, and I'd be grateful for some help in interpreting occupations please, circa 1841-1865. Has anyone come across "Pasturian" which is what it looks like? or for the same person "Husbandman"? I know from censuses he was a farmer of some kind in Monkwearmouth. Any guidance will be most appreciated. TIA edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks

    1. Archibald WILSON, South Shields, 1891 census request
    2. Fiona Wilson
    3. Hi everyone, I'm a new subscriber to this list and hope I've chosen the right one which relates to South Shields! I've had a quick search through the archives for this list and haven't spotted anything on Archibald WILSON already so am asking SKS if they could please look him up in the 1891 census. - He should be about 32 (born in 1859, Aberdeen,Scotland), occupation probably something like Marine Engineer, but may not be - His wife should be Williamina WILSON, aged about 31 (also born Scotland) - Their eldest son is also Archibald and should be about 11 (born 1880, Aberdeen, Scotland) In 1891 they had a son Thomas who died in 1892 aged 10 months. The address given is 207 Baring Street, Westoe, South Shields so I am hoping the family are at this address in the census. From a photo (date unknown) there are also 3 other children, but I don't have any names. If anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful. Additionally if anyone knows anything about this family I would love to hear from you. Many thanks, Fiona WILSON, Sheffield, UK

    2. willsbri
    3. Hi David, Not to add too much to your confusion, but I have in my history a Tom Rowntree who was the carpenter of a ship captained by my gg grandfather, B.R. Wilson. The ship was the Cubana out of Sunderland carrying copper ore from Cuba to Swansea. The ship was featured in several newspaper articles and I also have a copy of a letter written in 1884 by Tom to BRW after they had retired. If you would like details please contact me off list and I will gladly supply you copies. Best regards Brian Wilson - Adelaide

    1. Any Help Appreciated
    2. David Rowntree
    3. I have a real mystery. My gg grandfather William Moody Rowntree was born in Bishopwearmouth 7 May 1841, father Thomas Rowntree, mother Mary Baxter (I have the birth certificate). I found Thomas Rowntree marrying Mary Baxter 4 June 1840 in Monkwearmouth parish church (I have the certificate). I found the family in 1851 census but they had 3 older children, Thomas b 13 Oct 1829, Elizabeth 1832, John 1836. From the above it appeared Thomas had been married twice and there was a Margaret Hindmarch marrying a Thomas Rowntree 22 Feb 1829. There was a Margaret Rowntree dying in Dec qtr 1839. All the dates were very neat however checking the IGI all 3 earlier children were listed as having Mary Baxter as the mother, in fact John was listed as John Baxter Rowntree. The IGI listings came from transcripts of Sunderland, baptisms (p. 1-524) 1719-1879. There is no other record I can find of Thomas Rowntree marrying Mary Baxter. What are the odds of two marriages nearly the same place and time with the same not particularly common names. Any ideas how I can resolve this? Maybe they didn't bother about marriage for the first 10 years - somehow I doubt it. Just to confound the issue the Thomas on the marriage certificate was Thomas Brady Rowntree, There was a Thomas Brodie Rowntree (IGI) born 1808 which fits with his age at the 1851 census and his mother was Mary Smith. William Moody's younger brother was named Smith Rowntree. A very confused David Rowntree

    3. Dear List My great grandfather, James CUTTER, was employed as an underground horsekeeper with the Wearmouth Colliery. On or around 1924/25 he was kicked by a horse while at work which resulted in him losing his sight. As a result, he spent the last 25 years of his life blind and much of that time living alone in Southwick. There are some great stories handed down about how he got around including knowing the number of steps to the tram stop, the number of steps from the tram to his favourite pub on The Green and being able to find his spot at the bar from some notches he carved into the bar. My question relates to being able to find out some more details about his accident such as: 1.. Would there be colliery records of this accident that could be accessed? 2.. Would the story be likely to have been reported in the papers, such as the Echo? Any information that would help would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards Grahame McDonald Sydney Australia

    2. Heather A. Punshon
    3. David I would try to check the original church records. You may find some notation there indicating that Thomas and Mary were not married. Perhaps the real wife was sick/unwilling/ or whatever and Mary was the housekeeper until she died, and then they married Sounds like a Catherine Cookson novel doesn't it Heather *************** website at www.punshon.ca/heather ***************

    1. Mary NICHOLSON
    2. I realise that NICHOLSON is a very common name in Northumbria, but maybe somebody has connections that would throw light on my great grandmother, whose origins have been driving me mad. This is a long and tortuous story, so don't read on unless you want to! I have a marriage cert. showing Mary NICHOLSON wed Thomas DOWNING, after Banns, at Monk Heseldon Parish Church on May 18 1872. Mary is stated to be 19, father William NICHOLSON, a Mason. Both of the happy couple gave the address Castle Eden Colliery. This would give Mary's birth between about May 1872 and May 1873, although she was illiterate, so this may be questionable. The next Census, 1881, they are living at Humbles Yard, Ryhope St., Ryhope, and Mary is now stated to be 27, born at Seaham Harbour. In 1891 they are at 37 Queen St., Ryhope, Mary is 38, born at Seaham Harbour. In 1901 they are at 42 Bond St. Sunderland, and Mary is 47, born at Seaham. Mary, now Mary DOWNING of course, died at Sunderland Municipal Hospital in February 1936, age given as 83 - this was from her daughter. All of this is entirely consistent and shows she believed she was born at Seaham Harbour around 1872-3. However, the only Mary Nicholson to be found born in the Seaham area at the right sort of time was Mary NICHOLSON, baptised at Seaham Harbour Church of St. John on 29 August 1855. I have a copy of the birth certificate, and it shows she was the daughter of William NICHOLSON and Catherine WEARS, born 9th July 1855. There is no other Mary NICHOLSON in the GRO born in the Easington Registration District between 1850 and 1855. For a long time I assumed this must be her, because the father's name was right, until I decided to find her in 1861 and 1871 censuses. Not being able to locate her at first, I checked her parents in 1881, and to my disgust found her widowed mother Catherine living at 29 Ryhope St., Ryhope with daughter Mary Ann WILE, aged 25, born Seaham Colliery. Checking back in 1861 and 1871 I found William (a Sinker in 1861, a Miner in 1871)) and Catherine NICHOLSON living at 13, and then 65, Ryhope St., with children including in 1861Mary Ann NICHOLSON age 6 born in Moorsley, which is adjacent to Seaham, and in 1871, Mary NICHOLSON, born in New Seaham. So it now seemed that this could not be the family of my Mary, since this one ended up marrying a John Johnson WILE about 1876. Looking further, I eventually found, in 1871, a Mary NICHOLSON age 18, born at Seaham, a servant at the Wellington Inn, Ryhope St., Ryhope. Since her future husband Thomas DOWNING also lived in Ryhope in 1871 at Burdon St., Ryhope Colliery, I think this Mary must be mine - right age, right birthplace. So far, my efforts to find another William NICHOLSON, a mason, who could have been her father, have been entirely fruitless. But what is puzzling me is the number of coincidences in this story. Both Marys had fathers named William, both fathers had mining-related jobs; both Marys were born in Seaham Harbour or nearby, and both of them lived in Ryhope St. in 1871. Then in 1873 Mary and Thomas DOWNING were living back in Ryhope again in the same street as the WILE family, and stayed in that area for some years. The fact that I have spent months looking in the Co. Durham censuses for 1861 and 1871 and not found a family for the older Mary compounds the problem. And although the Mary that became Mary WILE seems to be the one born in 1855, that one was neither baptised nor registered as Mary Ann, which is the name used in 3 censuses out of 4 by the one who became Mary ANN WILE. So I wonder if my Mary was somehow connected to the other one - cousins, maybe. But her birth certainly wasn't registered where it should have been, and I have no idea where she was in 1861. Any suggestions? Adrian, Hants.
