At the East end of the wharf which was later called the Commissioners' Quay was a slipway, and a ferry ran from there to Sand Point Road at the East end of the North Sands Shipbuilding Yard. I would assume that this is 'Hardcastle's Slipway' although it is not marked as such. There was also the 'Low Ferry' which ran from the Custom House Quay to Strand Street at the West end of the North Sands Shipbuilding Yard. In 1830, which was before the building of the South Docks, Thornhill's Wharf was at the entrance to the river, and would fit with the report for 16th May 1830. The ferry mentioned in that report was most probably the Sunderland Ferry. I hope this helps? Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    2. I have just found that a great-uncle by marriage, Patrick O'Neill, was found in the Wear drowned near Hardcastle's Slip in 1913. According to the death cert. the coroner found no explanation as to the reasons for him being in the river. Family hearsay has it that he was inebriated and took a dive off a ferryboat, but this doesn't seem to be substantiated. I've searched for Hardcastle's Slip on the Net, and the only reference I can find is to a shipping disaster in May 1830, where 65-75 ships were grounded due to a severe outrush of water, and this imples that the Slip was near the Sunderland harbour entrance. Does anyone know where it was, and if there was a ferry nearby? Adrian, Hants

    3. Hello Listers...............after years of searching have found the married name for Mary Ann Reed. In 1885 she married a Charles Cassidy at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Walker, District of Tynemouth. I have found her and two children arriving New York City in 1899. Her husband, Charles, residing in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. The 19l0 Census shows just Mary Ann and her son, Charles. Is there any out there researching this family? Still searching - Judy

    1. Descendants of Shepherdson - Bishopwearmouth, Durham
    2. P S
    3. Hi Everyone, I would appreciate any information or help to trace descendants /ancestors of William Shepherdson who was born on 1649 and married to Grace Neelson on 4 June 1672. They were from Bishopwearmouth, Durham and they were presumably from a line of Mariners. They had 15 Children; one of them was William Shepherdson who moved to Ramsgate, Kent and was a Captain/Mariner . He was christened on 22 November 1690 (Durham) and married to Ann Holman on 24 October 1714 at the Church of St. Lawrence, Thanet, Kent. England. Please note the Shepherdson name (variations) has been spelt in several ways. Thanks With kind regards Percival Shepherdson (Shepherdson Family from Singapore/Malaysia -Descendants from William Shepherdson (1714) Ramsgate, Kent, England)
