    1. Re: [SUNDERLAND] Argyle House , Belvedere Road , Durham
    2. Argyle House was a private school. It still exists although it is now ARGYLE HOUSE SCHOOL19-20 Thornhill Park, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear SR2 7LA. http://www.isbi.com/isbi-viewschool/2654-ARGYLE_HOUSE_SCHOOL.html It could be that the original premises were on Belvedere Road, Sunderland, and they subsequently moved to Thornhill Park. Perhaps another lister can confirm this? In 1941 the school would have been evacuated, so the premises could have been requisitioned by the forces. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    3.  Hi Murray Thank you very much. I did know most of what you supplied but I was surprised at extra info you found. There is an poss extra in 1871 CHARLES Albert 3 yrs and where he may have been in 1891 (London) I was also trying to trace Wilfred in 1891 & you have possibly solved a mystery for me. Wilfred married an Iasabel b. Tanfield and I'll put money on that it is the daughter of the house in 1891. My line is through his sister MARY E. and she married a butcher from Chester-le-Street in 1901 I couldn't think how they met but I bet it was through Isabel's family living in Chester-le-Street. For list info 1871 GEORGE H COATES is in Staffordshire 1871 ALFRED H COATES is in Warminster 1891 EDWIN COATES is in Huddersfield 1913 Poss mention North Riding Yorkshire (Coneysthorpe) Again thank you for your excellent help. Hello I would be very gratefull if someone with the 1871 and 1891 census for Houghton-le-spring or Chester-le-street could look-up a ROBERT HARRISON for me He is on the 1881 census as ROBERT HARRISON head m 52 born Cockerton, Durham (occ Labourer) JANE HARRISON wife 56 born Shirburn, Durham WILLIAM HARRISON son 23 born Sacriston, Durham (occ Tailor) ELONOR ROSS G Daugh 2 born Durham EDWARD GOLLY lodger u 28 Born Crook, Durham (occ laboureR I am trying to find out if there is a relationship to another ROBERT HARRISON who married a DOROTHY ROSS in Houghton-le-spring in 1860 and was born in Newcastle-upon-tyne I have another ROBERT HARRISON that is causing confusion, he married my 2 great-grandmother DRUSILLA HALL in 1879 in Durham, she was a widow with two daughters from her previous marriage (I had a lot of help in this direction from a family bible ) On the 1881 census he gave his place of birth as Houghton, (I think it was Bournmoor) and his age as 39. His first child was born in 1880 and named MARY JANE, a second one was ANNIE, and a son GEORGE, this name could have come from DRUSILLA's father GEORGE It would be great if it was possable to find him also on the 1871 census, he would hopefully be living with his mother (Its a long shot though) I know not to take info on census as gosple from past expearience! My great grandmother ISABELLA HALL was a step-daughter on the 1881 census but on the 1891 she was named HARRISON (daughter) so was her sister, she was married as ISABELLA HARRISON !! On the 1901 census ISABELLA was married, her sister was still with her parents and gave her own surname as HALL step daughter Thankyou in advance for any info relaiting to this puzzle Carole Robinson -- Whatever you Wanadoo: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/ This email has been checked for most known viruses - find out more at: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/help/id/7098.htm

    2. Andy Nurse
    3. Hi all, I have recently received a marriage certificate for Robert GOVIS & Elizabeth SPEARING who married at the Parish Church in the parish of Sunderland on 23 April 1849. The residence at the time of marriage for both is shown as Mill Street (I presume Sunderland). As this is only a couple of years before the 1851 census I think that there is a chance that they may still be living in that area. If someone has a copy of that census would they please be so kind as to have a look at Mill Street. The name may appear as GOVERS and I believe Robert may have been born in Ireland. Thanks in advance, Andy in the Land of Oz --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. I have just come across one of my ancestors on a passenger list for SS Lusitania in 1909 in New York. He is grouped with a Swedish sea captain and they are going to Panama. Now John Durey was a marine engineer born and bred and with family in Southwick, so what is he doing in Panama? The Panama Canal was under constuction at this time and the list shows he had been through New York previously and indeed is absent from his family on 1901 census. Were engineers recruited from Sunderland shipyards to work on the Canal? Has anyone else come across family going there?

He is hoping that the database may be completed and put online to coincide with the Victoria County History launch of the History of Sunderland. If you send him written enquiries with a SAE, he will sweep his database. There is no search fee but donations to cover administration costs will be appreciated. 3. My interest in the Sunderland web site has been in regards to the Fulhams and Lawsons. However, I became very excited when I read the posting regarding the marriage of Louise and George. Perhaps our roots are linked! My great-grandfather is Charles Joseph Brown born 1870 in Northampton and dying circa 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His occupation was a clicker in a shoe factory, then painter. I have his attestation papers for WW1. I have some information about his Father, Joseph Brown, born 1836. He married a Hannah who was born around 1839. They had four children; Joseph Charles (1870), Sarah A. (1867), Joseph H. (1869) and John F. (1878) . I do not have a George Henry who would have been born around 1880 if he was 25 at the time of his marriage. He married Ada Elizabeth Lewis, born 1877 in Northampton, on March 08, 1897 in All Saints Church, Northampton. They had four children; Roy, Hazel, Olive and Cyril. Cyril Brown, my Grandfather, was born on Oct. 05, 1898 in Northampton and died on April 15, 1984 in Winnipeg. He married Harriet Lawson, born May 11, 1898 at home, 145 Coronation Street, SUNDERLAND. Her life spanned three centuries. She passed away in Winnipeg at the age of 102. I hope this information is helpful. I would appreciate anything you can add. Diane Brown Toronto, Ontario, CANADA

    2. Penny & Richard
    3. Hi everyone, this is my first post to your list. I have just found a marriage of Louise Margetts to George Henry Brown 3 March 1905. George's father's name was Charles Henry Brown and the witnesses were Joseph Brown and Ada Elizabeth Brown. George gave his occupation as engineer and his father was a saddler. I would like to find out what happened to this couple. She was probably from Oxfordshire but I don't know where George was born. At the time of there marriage in the register office Sunderland, they were both living at 54 Nora Street Sunderland. If I have the right Louise she had an illegitimate child in 1891, my Grandfather. On the marriage certificate she gives her age as 30 which for my Louise(a) is about 8 years too young, but she gives the right father's name and occupation. George is only 25 (maybe that's why she lied?). I know the Brown name is going to be difficult to trace but I would be grateful for any information that might help find if they had any children, and George's family. Thanks Penny in NZ
