    3. Hello Joan, Please excuse the delay in replying to you re: the photo of the southwick pawnbroker. I have been away for 3 weeks. It could well be Mr Goldman who lived at 3 Dunelm, Durham Rd., but it must be 45+ years since I was at No.2. I didn't see much of Mr Goldman as he used to go to work early, so I can't be sure its him on your photo.I know its not much help, but his wife was a small ginger haired lady, and there were two daughters, one named Alma. Regards, Derek.

    1. Address in Sunderland
    2. ian ridley
    3. Hello List, This is probably a question that Stan could answer, my GG Grandmother Maraget Hannah Hunter nee Thompson died in June 1918 and the address on the death certificate is given as "27 back of Wear St". Am I right in assuming that this was Tees St renamed as the family lived in Tees St for many years and it backs onto Wear St. Best regards Ian Ridley Coventry

Tweed Street, [between Nicholson St./Cousin St. and Lawrence St.], Tees Street [between Lawrence St. and Wear St.], and Tyne Street [between Wear St. and Woodbine St]. So 27 Back of Wear St. would be either Tees St. or Tyne St. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    3. My dad & his brothers lived in St. Bede's Tce. from 1913 onwards & went to Hanna's in St Georges Sq., later, in the war years (II) a cousin went to the same school, by now in Thornhill Park, I remember him referring to the head as "Jake" but I don't know his real name, by all accounts Jake must have been a somewhat hilarious figure. I went to the squashed tomatoes-Tonstall which was quite near Argyle House, we had the occasional run in with the green caps. Our head was called George Cheshire, the rumour was that he was related to Grp.Capt. Leonard Cheshire V.C. the bomber pilot. One thing I'll never forget was going to the Gill Bridge Ave/High St West swimming baths every Wednesday, there were no heated pools then, and the water must have been as cold as the sea at Roker, we only thawed out after walking back to school. When the Newcastle Road baths re-opened around 1946, the water seemed even colder !! One good thing in the war was that if there had been an air raid during the night, we could go to school an hour later. If anyone is interested I could get more info on Argyle House in the 1940's from my cousin. regards, Derek.

    1. Argyle House
    2. Hi Allan, Unfortunately the account of Sunderland's wartime evacuation makes no mention of Argyle House School, so I don't know if they were evacuated. The east side of St. George's Square was bombed in May 1943, and six houses were completely destroyed Nos. 6 to 11, 11 being the original address of the Hanna School. West Park Central School which was at the north end of St. George's Square, and faced onto West Park was also badly damaged. 18 people were killed and two bodies were never recovered. 1. Argyle House School
    2. Gordon Stott
    3. As a pupil at Barnes School in the 1930's, I remember an ex-pupil from Argyle House joining us, wearing the green and yellow scarf.....but not for long! In those days Argyle House, I recall, was often referred to as Hanna's, which was the name of the founder, James Hanna. I have a book, "The Swiss Family Robinson", awarded to a pupil, Tys Visser, at Midsummer 1894 It was awarded to him for Shorthand Class B and the plate shows the school to be located in St George's Square. The school motto was "Labor omnia vincit" and James Hanna M.A. was the principal. Regards, Gordon Stott

    1. Argyle House School
    2. I went to Argyle House School in the first half of the 1950s. It was at the far end of Thornhill Park, on the left. It is now half way up, on the right. The uniform was green and yellow. The headmaster at the time was called Patterson or Pattinson. The school did not have its own playing fields, so we used to go to Sparks Farm in the Tunstall/Silksworth area to play football. The school sports day was held at Boldon Cricket Ground, the school being divided into three "houses", North, South and County House - I was in County. I remember once correctly answering a question in class (but only once!) and the master gave me sixpence, which I used to buy some aniseed balls. Brian

    2. RICHARD O'HAIR
    3. If my memory serves me right, this school was in St. Georges Square and the pupils used to enter the school via the back lane facing the West Park. I also seem to remember during the war. the road leading from Stockton Rd. to the West Park had a barricade across it with a soldier on guard Richard O'Hair ---------------------------------------- My Inbox is protected by SPAMfighter 3823 spam mails have been blocked so far.
