    3. I'm sorry to bother the list, but someone wrote to me offlist today asking if I knew anything about another Sunderland pub called, I think, the Dew Drop pub. As I put all my mail through Mailwasher, I sometimes press the button too quickly and wipe what I don't want to. If he/she would like to write again via the list they may get more information than I am able to give. I haven't come across this pub in my enumeration district. Sorry about this. Janice

    3. Just been reading about the local ice cream vendors in Sunderland, Louis in Crowtree Rd., was where the Sunderland footballers of the late 40's & early 50's used to hang out, later they could be seen in the Bis Bar by the Ritz cinema when not training. The best ice cream in the area came from Houghton, by the bus stop, the Dimambro family had a traditional parlour with marble topped tables in booths, however the big attraction wasn't just the ice cream, there was a very lovely daughter, Antoinette. It was worth a stop off on the way back from Durham ice rink just to see if she was in the parlour...trouble was, the father didn't care for his daughter being chatted up by young lads. Derek

    3. And I'll bet that just mentioning them has brought back a whole pile of memories! In Stockton, the only Italian icecream parlour was Pacitto's where my cousin and I were taken for a treat every Saturday morning. I suspect that the first long words I could read were 'Knockerbocker Glory' - and I have NEVER had one! But to have an icecream in a dish - not a cone - was a luxury anyway! I did a search of Italian-born people in the Northern Borders region of the 1881 census. There were 356 entries, many of whom were sailors on ships in the ports. The most popular occupations seemed to be either ice-cream vendors or street musicians. Indeed some of the 356 were bandsmen on board Royal Navy ships! Somebody should write a book! Janice Toowoomba

    3. As well as Notarianni's in High St West, there was Pompa's in High St East where my mother Patsy worked for many years until it burnt down in the Joplings store fire in the mid-fifties.The Fella's had a shop at the bottom of Silksworth Row Bank and the Maggiore family had Louis' in Crowtree Road. I also remember Tony Puggi (or Pucci) who had an icecream cart - the forerunner of the icecream van! 3. As always, Stan, you are a mine of information! I hadn't realised that Sunderland had been such an important port- being a Stockton girl myself. All those immigrant groups you mentioned have appeared in my census district with the exception of the Italian icecream vendor. I will add a couple of Englishmen (born in Co. Durham) who were 'French interpreters' and one Thomas Smith who was born in a French prison. There was obviously a huge Irish presence in the area just a step back from the wharfs - I must have checked literally hundreds of them. I can recommend the Freecens project for anyone who wants to learn about the social history of an area. Reading the census gives an overall view of the population, their origins and their work which you don't get just by checking your family. Thanks again Janice Toowoomba

The tough bit is finding it! I kick off with a Sarah Ann STOREY [1814-1860] who married Cuthbert VAUX on 14th June 1834 at Holy Trinity, Sunderland. She was a daughter to John STOREY [1778-1860], who married Sarah STAFFORD [unresearched] at St Hilda's South Shields on 7th August 1803. I have it that John STOREY came from Tanfield, Co Durham. John STOREY is described as a painter. I don't know whether this means that he was an artist or a workman! All the other STOREYS in my tree are also children of this marriage, names being Mary, John, Matthew William, Thomas, Henry, Michael and Jane. Please let me know of any of this links with any thread of yours. I haven't made any link from the leads you kindly sent me, which I shall keep on file.
