    1. Re Queen Street
    2. My dad was born in Queen Street in 1915 and part of it is now the location of Marks & Spencer. My uncle told of a story that in the 1920's a bull got loose from a nearby abbatoir, and people took refuge in the adjoining alleys. Only the bull charged through a back entry and sent the occupants flying! EC Robson's Flour Mill stood there and according to uncle itwas the highest building of its day in Sunderland

    3. Hi All, Thanks to a suggestion from Tim I contacted the Sunderland Registrars Office and asked them to confirm the address on the certificate. Drum Roll Please... It is Farrington Hall. If anyone has any more information on this one I would appreciate it. I already have the location and that it has now been replaced by council housing thanks to Stan. Lesson learnt - always go back to the original! Thanks again to everyone's help Regards Gabrielle --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun!

    2. Castle Street is off High Street West and ran down the East side of Vaux Brewery, it was just before the junction of Gill Bridge Avenue and Crowtree Road. Go to http://tinyurl.com/6kfw5 and you will see it marked just below Gill Road. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    3. Could anyone tell me the approx location of Castle Street in Bishopwearmouth. The Marriage Certificate (dated Dec 7 1850) of my GGGrandparents in the Parish Church (St. Michaels?) shows they resided in Castle Street. George Smale aged 21 married Ellen Pevlar (this could be Peveler) also 21. His father is shown as Adam Smale -a timber merchant and Ellen's as John - a Fireman. I have not been able to find any records of Adam Or John - this may be due to a phonetic spelling of the surname by the Curate. I would appreciate any help on the location of Castle Street or ideas on finding Adam and John. Western Canada is a bit to far from Sunderland- although I must admit to having undying support for the Red and Whites. (when and how did they become the Black Cats?) Keith Errington

    3. Gaby, If you have doubts about any difference between the original certificate and the GRO issue certificate that you have, it could be worth your while contacting the Sunderland registrars at http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/public/editable/life-episodes/bdm/ccs09b-d-m.asp to see if they can issue you with a "real" copy of the original (as opposed to a transcription copy), complete with the participants' "real" signatures. They responded positively and very quickly to an email from me regarding a GRO mistranscription a few months ago. They may perhaps be able to confirm whether the original shows Herrington or Farrington without you having to buy another certificate, if you wish to save a few quid. I could presume that as they were married in a registry office that the clerk may not have been familiar with the Hall and wrote it as he heard it. <remainder snipped>

    3. WOW - Thank you everyone for all your amazing information. To get -locations -uses -owner -book reference etc was a boon! I am in Australia so I will see if The Australian Society of Genealogist has copies of any of the books you all mentioned. I have a feeling that it must be Herrington rather than Farrington Stan, because the H on the certificate is so clear but as I stated this is a GRO issue certificate so the original may look differently. I could presume that as they were married in a registry office that the clerk may not have been familiar with the Hall and wrote it as he heard it. I have printed all the information out and may get back to some of you off list for further information. I am so very glad my first posting was so successful and may of helped other people! Does anyone have any idea regarding Hannah's movement as posted in the original question - would it be likely she moved from Kelloe to Low, Rawgreen , Hexham back to Silksworth or are the distances too unfeasible? Thanks again! Gabrielle Sydney Australia --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The all-new My Yahoo! – Get yours free!

    3. I am again relying on "Herrington and its folk" and a quick glance through this has not produced any reference to William Punshon other than under "East Herrington" where there is reference to a list of hearths for 1674 in which there are 20 hearths for East Herrington, one of which belongs to William Punshon. When dealing with the ancient village and the Manor House Douglas Smith mentions the name "Punshion". Alan Vickers.
