    1. [SUNDERLAND] streets within roads : ellerslie terrace, part of newcastle road
    2. Alan Vickers
    3. I have done a 'Google' search and found three family history references to Ellerslie Terrace but no information as to where it was. I did find reference to '36 Elleslie Terrace' so the street was even bigger than suggested. Streets within roads in Sunderland will probably continue to cause problems. Quite close to where I live is 'Ashleigh Terrace' within Atkinson Road and also Holyoake Terrace and Garcia Terrace, both within Mere Knolls Road. Alan Vickers.

    3. hello everybody i have a similar problem does anyone know where i can find, as described in wards 1889/90 'ellerslie terrace, part of newcastle road' ? i have at least numbers 1-33, so it must have been a fairly large block of houses...but i cant find it on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/, or on my 1895 street map my g gf lived there briefly in number 29 cheers andrew > > In a message dated 04/01/2005 12:42:15 GMT Standard Time, > gspearson@btopenworld.com writes: > > The whole block was on a road named something else. > > > > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > > Kensington Terrace and Kensington Terrace South were on Toward Road. > > Regards Stan Mapstone > www.mapstone.org > > > ==== ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND Mailing List ==== > History of Sunderland, > http://www.sunderland-index.co.uk/history/history01.html >

    3. If you look on www.historicaldirectories.org you can search for all sorts of things. For example, there is George Allison, Builder, Fulwell Road in Kellys Directory of 1890 for Durham. Terraces then were often complete blocks built on a road of another road. For example, I am still looking for 11 Kensington Terrace, where Miles Abstemious Pearson lived in 1890 - according to Kelly - but there is no such number in Kensington Terrace in the 1891 census - it reappears in the 1901 census. The whole block was on a road named something else. Geoff Pearson Scotland, UK

    3. Clifford, Just a few thoughts - In a response to one of your earlier messages to the Northumbria list I see a reference to "Campbell Terrace, Fulwell Road". Perhaps Campbell Terrace was a building, not a street. And perhaps you should be searching Roker rather than Seaburn. Have you looked at all the available trade directories etc for the period? http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/ncl/TradeDir3.html shows a pretty fair list of library holdings in the region which might help? Good luck Tim Sewell. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Clifford Allison" <clifford-allison@supanet.com> To: <ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2005 4:18 AM Subject: [genealogy] [SUNDERLAND] Campbell Terrace, Fulwell > 109 years ago today, in 1896, my Father (Howard Gourley Allison) was born at > 4 Campbell Terrace in Fulwell. > > > > Last year, I went in search of this address in the seaburn area but it seems > that Campbell Terrace no longer exists - since when, I don't know. > > > > Does anyone recall this street, and/or can they point me to an old map that > might show it? There are a number of examples in Sunderland, especially on the long main roads. There was an Argyle Terrace on Fulwell Road between Sea Lane and Brown Road, and also a Wardell Terrace on Fulwell Road at the Roker Baths Road end between All Saints Church and Sutherland Street. 3. Clifford - I am not sure where Cambell Street was but will try to find out. I have not been able to locate it on the maps that I have. The 1899 directory lists about eleven names of people living in Cambell Terrace. R Potts, Blacksmith ws living in No 4 at that time. Alan Vickers.

    3. 109 years ago today, in 1896, my Father (Howard Gourley Allison) was born at 4 Campbell Terrace in Fulwell. Last year, I went in search of this address in the seaburn area but it seems that Campbell Terrace no longer exists - since when, I don't know. Does anyone recall this street, and/or can they point me to an old map that might show it? What sort of area was Campbell Terrace? Might number four have been a maternity home? The address is unknown to me in any other context. Any clues please? Thanks in anticipation, Clifford Allison

I believe Sarah's mother's name was Mary Ann. Their first two children also born Durham were William b. 1867 and Elleanor b. 1875. I believe the family then moved to Milford Haven. John Stafford was a plumber as was his brother William. If anyone has any knowledge of this family I would love to hear from you. Regards Lyn Tregilgas Adelaide South Australia
