Barrack Street is still there see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=440791&Y=557612&A=Y&Z=1 Bank Street is not, it was to the north of Barrack Street and ran parallel to the river between Long Bank and Pottery Bank. The Parade is some distance away to the south see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=440860&Y=556327&A=Y&Z=1 You can see old maps of Sunderland at _http://www.tomorrows-history.com/mapping/maps.htm_ (http://www.tomorrows-history.com/mapping/maps.htm) Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

Hi Lyn I think I have links to these families but not everything quite ties up. On the 1871 census I have a John and Eleanor Waters living with Eleanor's widowed mother Mary Ann Hore (nee Drummond). Also with them is Eleanor's younger sister Sarah and their son William age 1 year. In the September Qtr 1869 marriage index Eleanor Ann Hore and John Stafford Waters are listed on the same page (19b 658) On the 1881 census John S Waters wife is down as Sarah, so did Eleanor die and John marry her sister? I was under the impression that a marriage between a man and his wife's sister was regarded as incest. Can anyone confirm this? Mary Ann Hore was the daughter of James Drummond and Mary Husband. She married William Hoar in 1840, all I know about William is that he was a mariner and his father was called John, I think William died in 1858. I have been searching for William and Mary Ann Hoar on the 1861 census as Mary Ann is the sister of my ggg grandfather James Drummond. James' mother died when he was 2 years old and in 1851 he was living with his grandparents James & Mary Drummond but he was not with them in 1861. I have not had any luck with the 1861 so far but I will have a look over the next few weeks to see if I can find any trace of them on the 1851. I am researching the above families both separately and together. John Stafford Waters b. 1845 Durham also a brother William. I have no idea who their parents were. I know Joihn married Sarah Jane Hore, don't know when but their son William was born in 1867 and Eleanor b. 1875. I would really appreciate sks willing to look up the 1851 census which may give me details on both families. Regards Lyn Tregilgas in hot and sunny Adelaide South Australia

Hello I wonder if someone in Sunderland may be able to help. I wrote a letter to the Sunderland Echo just after Christmas, hoping they may publish an article that would help me locate relatives of my great grandfather JAMES LINCOLN RACKSTRAW who left Sunderland in 1912. I understand they may have published the article in the last few weeks. If anybody there has a scanner and has a copy of the article ... could they email me a copy? I hope this isn't too much to ask. I sent them a couple of photographs taken in the 1960 of my relatives in Sunderland so they might have published those too. Tony - the article "A life across the sea" appeared in last night's "Sunderland Echo". It included a section "Do you know his siblings?" The article is a full page and I am unable to scan it for you. It occurs to me that you may be able to access it via the newspaper's website. If you are unable to access the page or if you do not obtain a scan of the page I can send the article to you via ordinary post. Alan Vickers.
Did you know about the on-line Echo at http://www.sunderland-echo.co.uk/ ? Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

Dear Grant, Noticing your interest in major Shipbuilding families, I was wondering if you had heard of James Allison's yard on Monkwearmouth Shore. It lasted from 1818 until 1833 and one of the THOMPSONS (Robert 1797-1860) did his apprenticeship there. James Allison was Mayor of Sunderland twice and, whilst I wouldn't call him exactly "major", you can get a "bead" on his/my family at http://members.cox.net/ghgraham/jamesallison.html .Have you any knowledge of this family? Likewise, noting your interest in Sunderland MP's, I am trying to trace the origins of Sir Edward Temperley GOURLEY (1826-1902), who was an MP for Sunderland for 32 years (1868-1900). Rumour has it that the Gourleys came from Fife, but despite his knighthood and apparent renown, I've never been able to get behind Sir Edward's father, who was John Young Gourley, 1801-1867, a shipowner who lived in St Bede's Terrace. Any ideas you may have on how I could get further would be valued. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year! Clifford Allison. _________________________ Grant White Born Sunderland, now living London, England Always on the lookout for the major shipbuilding families of Wearside.
A couple of years ago I was corresponding with Pat Allinson about Sunderland MP 1922-1929 Sir Luke Thompson. If you're still interested I have some more data, but your old e-mail seems to be inactive ... please get back in touch.
