    3. Thank you so much to Tracy, Avril, Lesley, Philip and Susan for their kind help with the information I needed. As you are all so knowledgeable about Bishopwearmouth, I wonder if I can now ask everyone's advice about how to find birth details for my WILLIAM DUGDALE around 1828. The earliest address I have for him was in 1855 at Exhibition Terrace, Hillfield, Bishopwearmouth. I think his parents are JOHN and ESTHER Dugdale who married in 1821 (I found their marriage on Genuki at St Peters, Monkwearmouth). WILLIAM married ISABELLA SMITH but I can't find their marriage on 1837online or the IGI, and Sunderland Local Studies Centre couldn't help me. If I can confirm William's parents it will be a huge chunk to add to my tree. Any advice gratefully accepted. Kind regards, Helen Dugdale Rotherham, South Yorkshire

    3. Would anyone be able to look for Mary Clark (I know it's a popular name) aged about 17/18 in the 1851 census of Sunderland She married Thomas Tofu two years later, in 1853, and lived in Coronation Street -could I strike lucky and hope she was there in 1851 On her marriage certificate her Fathers name is John Clark glassmaker I am coming on in leaps and bounds except for the birth of John Clack /Toft He was born around 1852/ 53, Mary is his mother but it seems he was born before she wed To complicate things he gave his Fathers name on his marriage certificate as Thomas Clark! There are four births for John Clark in Sunderland in the time fame I am looking at but I want t be sure before ordering birth certificates Cheers for now Pat

Hi Allan, Life in the Merchant Service was more dangerous than in mining. In the 1860s the death rate was higher then in the worst Victorian city, 1 in 80 died of disease, 1 in 70 drowned and 1 in 20 was invalided out. So 1 in 12 were lost to the service by accident, disease or disability, to which can be added the large number who jumped ship, often in the USA or Australia. In 1881, the peak year, 4,000 masters and men died by wreck, drowning or accident. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    3. That's good to hear Averil are those records online at all as the Daniel Toft I believe would be mine If they are no online would you be able to pint me in the right direction to buy the book or Cod which ever it is Daniel Toft's death - 16th July 1848 from letters of administration (dated 20th December 1848) of his estate granted to his widow Mary. Value of estate was under 450 pounds. Seamen's register Daniel Toft aged 43 born Sunderland Number 4892 Toft family in Crew lists 'Zion's 27 May to 30 September 1836 from Liverpool to Quebec, Daniel Toft 44 born Sunderland is master and George Toft 14 born Sunderland is an apprentice. I have not been able to slot George into place yet but will no doubt if I keep digging Cheers Pat

    1. Re Mariners
    2. I found my missing mariner in the Trafalgar Square Records (Seamens Home Sunderland) published by the NDFHS. He died in 1849 off the coast of Scarbrough from cholera whilst mate of the Mary & Dorothy of Sunderland (all information from record). This helped get me his seamans record at Kew, and found he came from Hampshire, red hair, 5'3'' and literate, plus date of birth A Daniel Toft is listed, an Alan Orrock, and a John & Thomas English. Even if you don't find your ancestor, they make interesting reading. Avril
