    3. Thanks very much to Stan and Geoff for sharing their excellent knowledge about the Deptford area. Much appreciated! The 1841 census mentions a "Laings Road" which doesn't seem to appear in later censuses....could this be the later Wellington Lane in Deptford? The same census also mentions a "Depford Lodge" and "Deptford Cottage" on Laings Road....does anyone know more of these? Back also to Wellington Farm which was listed on the 1841 census (at least the Wellington Farm HOUSE was present) Can anyone enlighten me more about this farm, occupants and when it ceased to exist. Was the Ballast Hill Corn Mill part of this farm? Back once more also to the Salt Grass Public House....the building that stands today does anyone know if this is what was 37, Hanover Place and / or 1, Wellington Lane? Finally, if anyone has a copy of Sunderland in the 1850s: A Focus on Deptford and would be willing to email me a scan of the maps therein this would be much appreciated! THANK YOU! 2. ROB SHEPHERD
    3. Hello I wonder if anyone may be able to give me some more details about the Deptford area of Sunderland, particularly the following: 1. Old maps show originally the lands of Deptford belonged to "General Aylmer", Rowland Webster, Phillip Laing, John Harrison, Thomas Pemberton, Thomas Hopper. Mr. Snow and Mr. Odgen. Does anyone know who these people were or can give me any biographical details about them? 2. Does anyone have any details of when and who occupied Diamond Hall, Southwick Lodge and Wellington Farm, all of which were in Deptford? When were these built and demolished? Was there a windmill originally on Wellington Farm? 3. Back in 1851 and up until 1881 my ancestors lived at 1, Wellington Lane. Later directories and census material suggests this became the SaltGrass public house. Does anyone know exactly when the pub came into being; were there beer retailers there before? 4. What was the origin of the name "Ayre's Quay" Did it just refer to a small portion of Deptford or was it synonymous with the whole area? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just new to the mailing list, but hope there may be many out there knowledgeable about all this. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks very much! The thickness of its walls revels the strength required to support the machinery it once contained. Also - Lt-General Arthur Aylmer (d 1831) became Lt-General of the Durham Light Infantry in 1825. He had married Ann Harrison, heiress to the Walworth Estate. He lived at Walworth Castle (now a Hotel) and is buried in Heighington Church. Geoff Nicholson

    2. Hello Jill, I have the top of the tree Matthew (born c.1801) & Jane Taylor on a part of my tree. Unfortunately for Paul they are not my blood line in any way, and I have only found them because of my research into Hannah Swan who married into my Thompson shipbuilding family. See: _http://members.cox.net/ghgraham/josephthompson1824.html#wife2_ (http://members.cox.net/ghgraham/josephthompson1824.html#wife2) I have however found the grave of Matthew (a shipwright of 30 Barclay Street, Monkwearmouth) & Jane also children Margaret Isabella & Joseph in Sunderland, and have a photo and a copy of the inscription that I can send to Paul. I also have I also have some details of the descendants taken from census records. I'll be interested in Paul's part as I don't have that line in any detail. As I'll have to send them either as an attachment or post please contact me off list for further information. Regards, Grant White Born Sunderland, now living London, England Always on the lookout for the major shipbuilding families of Wearside.
