Thanks Stan, for your quick reply on the identification of the street names and possible church name. It needed someone who knows the area and as we are West Country folk (the descendants of the Flynns moved from Sunderland to London and then Devon) it is not always easy to find these places!(I did look on google maps and looked up some Catholic Churches but I didn't realise there so many. Thanks Pat and Derek for the Familysearch batch numbers - I will look these up. I would appreciate a contact with Flynns in the city. You never know they may be connected. Maggie
Hi Mark, See http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/public/editable/life-episodes/dwad/master/lflt-locating-a-grave.asp Stan
First Post on this forum We are trying to find some info on Evelyn Olive Quayle, who was my wife's maternal Grandmother, and also on Evelyn's parents. Family info says that Evelyn came from IoM and that her father was John J Quayle but looking at the 1901 Census the only Evelyn Quayle shows a girl of 3 years age, born in Durham Garvesland, Admin County: Sunderland, Civil Parish: Sunderland. Family info again says that she was born on 5th September 1898 which fits with the age on the census. Her marriage certificate shows her marrying David Webster in Wavertree, Liverpool on 23rd December 1922 - also shows her father John Quayle, Painter, deceased at that time. Evelyn died in Liverpool 22nd July 1961. I can't find any info in the IoM on Evelyn and there are many John Quayle's. Any info or suggestions greatly appreciated. Hi! - I am new to the list and wondered if any listers could help me find a relevant church that could hold some baptism dates A family named Flynn/Flin/Flinn lived in Sunderland from 1850 to 1910 The addresses I have are as follows 1851 11 Rolinson Lane, Sunderland, Durham 1859 24 Mariners Lane, Sunderland 1861 6 Mill Street, Sunderland Durham 1871 5 West Avenue, Sunderland Durham 1901 14 Sussex Street, Sunderland Durham I believe them to be Catholic. Does anyone with local knowledge know which Catholic Church they could have belonged to. I also wondered if anyone knew how I could find out what this Flynn could have done? 1881 Old Elvet Durham, Elvet, Durham, England Michael Flynn abt 1851 Sunderland, Durham, Married, Bricklayers Labourer Much appreciated Maggie

Except for Sussex Street all these addresses are off High Street East. The Catholic Church in 1851, 1859 and probably 1861 would be St. Mary's, 27 Bridge Street, opened in 1835. St. Patrick's, in Church Street, was built in 1861 to serve the East End, and would be the one for 1871 and 1901. Stan
Hi Stan In the 1871 census they lived at 2 Bank St in Sunderland, census reads as follows. James Allan Head 36 Seaman Born Scotland Elizabeth Wife 34 Sunderland James Son 8 " " Elizabeth Daur 5 " " Ernest W Son 4 " " My Grandfather Henry A Son 2 " " Margaret Daur 5 Months " " James was at sea in the 1861 census on the Aurora aged 27 and down as married, I got this from Scotland People, also that he was born in Kirkintillock, I have I think located his parents, but no sign of a marriage. As Elizabeth could not read or write may explains why there is no trace of her when he is at sea. I have birth certs for all their offspring except Elizabeth, hope this clarifies things a bit. Regards Allan 08/09/07 14:40

Hi everyone I have still not traced the marriage of my Gr Grandparents James Allan and Elizabeth Batty I think it was prior to 1861 as he was at sea on the Aurora aged 27 and married, I think they would have wed in Sunderland or Durham as their first born was in Sunderland in 1863. I have birth certs for most of their children. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards Allan. 07/09/07 14:19
Hi Allan, Are they in the 1861 or 1871 censuses? How old were James Allan and Elizabeth Batty in 1861? The more information you give the easier it is to find possible marriages. Stan
South Church is a village near Bishop Auckland so you should look for births registered in Auckland, County Durham. Dear Stan, Thank you for the information about listed buildings in Sunderland http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/ListedBuildings/lbnewsearch.asp The photograph at 920-1/12/107 shows the premises at 170, 171, and 173 High Street West and it is just possible to see the distinctive features of Lambton's Bank (Number 176 High Street West ) on the right hand edge. The narrative that accompanies the photograph says that Number 172 was subsumed into Number 173, which was refronted late 19th C. Do you have any information or photographs to indicate what happened to the premises at 175 High Street West? According to Ward's Directory of Sunderland (1893-4), my ancestor John Grace WOODBRIDGE was a furniture dealer at this address. kind regards, Colin
Stan, In Hay on Wye, one of the bookshops had books of old photos relating to various UK towns. This is where I got my copy of the book of Sunderland old photos. Some of the Hay book shops are online, so even if you can't identify the correct one, I would think that they may know the name of the shop you need. Regards, Derek.
