From the 1901 Census Barbara was born in 1876. and the most likely Matthew Hutton is a visitor with a family in Harton, South Shields, who was born in 1872, and is a mason's labourer. If you get the marriage certificate of Matthew and Barbara, it will confirm his occupation. The GRO reference is 10a 1701 and you can order online at http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/ This Matthew Hutton's father, John Hutton, was a mariner in the 1881 census.. Stan

Hi Ann You can see the location of Smyrna Chapel, marked "O" on the map at http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p2650&ref1=2415 Did you get my email about Frank E. Franks? Stan
Hi Ann, The Victory was at the junction of Borough Road and Smyrna Place. It was formerly the Smyrna Chapel and was destroyed on 15/16th April 1941 in the same air raid that destroyed the Victoria Hall. Stotty Cake is a large flat cake of bread also known as oven bottom cake. Ned cake is a cake kneaded with butter, dripping or lard and generally baked on the girdle Stan
Hi Stan, Can you please tell me what the difference was between Stotty Cake and Ned Cake, also where was the Victory cinema Regards from a very hot Gold Coast of Australia Regard to all from Ann

Hi Stan & list, Thanks for your email & the info. you sent, sorry for the confusion, yes my father was Alexander Home CAMPBELL, on looking @ the marriage cert. I have for James & Catherine, they were not married until Feb 1911 so, any children they had would not be on a census until 1911 or 1921, neither of which we have access to at the moment. Since I have recently started I am trying to get info. on my direct ancestors (Campbell), but since it is a popular name in those parts, it might be difficult (but not impossible). Regards, Malcolm (Campbell)

What information do you want from the 1891 and 1901 censuses? Stan

Hi Listers My g,grandfather Thomas Fairless died in 1913, the place of death was given as workhouse infirmary, his home address was given as Trimdon St. The Fairless family were fairly well off so I'm wondering why he would have been in the infirmary, was this not just for residents of the workhouse? Or was it for everyone? Can anyone help with this query please? Regards Julia
Hi all, A couple of years ago, my now deceased father (Alexander Home) said there were children born to his parents, but there all died, except he & his brother (Alfred), & of course I didn't ask him for more details. His parents were; James CAMPBELL (father), born Dec.19/1885 in Sunderland, Catherine Melrose (nee HOME) (mother), born Jan. 4/1887 in Sunderland, I have looked in the 1881 census, but of course it's too early, & since I don't have the 1891 census I can't look there, I'd greatly appreciate if someone can check for me to see if there were other children, since they were born & married in Sunderland I'm presuming they lived there. Since I have recently started my genealogy any other info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Regards, Malcolm Campbell, London,Ontario,Canada

Hi Julia, Sunderland Union Workhouse was on Hylton Road, and there was also a hospital on the site. It was called the Highfield Hospital, although the building remained predominantly a Poor Law Institution a small number of beds were set aside for the sick and mentally ill. Sunderland Union Hospital was administered by the Board of Guardians until 1929, when after the Board were abolished the Borough separated the Municipal Hospital from the Highfield Institution. The Local Health Committee became responsible for the Hospital. By 1930, the workhouse site had become known as the Highfield Institute and Municipal Hospital. Under the National Health Service, the hospital became Sunderland General Hospital. now the Sunderland Royal Hospital. Stan
