Just one tiny little addition to that list of parishes to check. It is easy to overlook the fact that the parish of Corbridge included the parochial chapelry of Halton. In the early 19th century Halton was, as it is today, a "dot on the map" village, but people living in, say, Great Whittingham would have been more likely to have just gone across a few fields to Halton than to have made the long journey right down into the bottom of the Tyne valley to reach Corbridge and then to have had the long climb back out of it to reach home again. 2. I think that you will find it is not the easiest database to use (:- )) for instance Sunderland 1769-1842 has 1,412 pages, with no index, and there are a batch of transcripts for Wallsend parish among them. Stan

    2. Hi. I have seen some requests for help regarding records from this area. I wondered if everyone on the list was familiar with the new LDS website where they have microfilmed records online to search? They are testing the site and you are required to register and they want feedback about how you like the set up of the website. There are not a lot of records there yet but one that some on this list might be interested in searching. You have to browse these particular records and they are not ALL the records for the area but someone might find something. They have the " England Diocese of Durham Bishops Transcripts, 1700 - 1900". You can find the website here: http://search.labs.familysearch.org/ Margaret

Hi John. Wouldn't the younger Joseph be listed with his parents in the 1881 census? I think I found the family of the older Joseph listed in 1881 and there was not a son the right age named Joseph listed with the family. Margaret

Now to my question, I have the soldier's release book for an ancestor Thomas RUTHERFORD, and wonder if anyone can tell me how I would go about applying for his Army Service record. The book shows his Army number and his Regiment - R.A.S.C. together with the unit - 5 ARMD BDE COY and Rank DVR. >From that I assume he was a Driver with the 5th Armoured Brigade of the Royal Army Service Corps. Would that be sufficient detail to apply for his record? 1. [ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND] Examples of Census Enumerators' Books
    2. The census enumerators books were regarded by the GRO as the raw material from which to produce the tables published in the 'Census Reports'. In this process the books were altered and annotated, on the original books these are in coloured inks, crayon, or pencil, and can easily be differentiated from the enumerators' returns. On monochrome microfilm these additions are difficult to differentiate. For examples of actual census pages in original colour see http://tinyurl.com/2wpx2g which is RG13 piece 297 folio 22 page 1, and http://tinyurl.com/233wwl which is RG13 piece 1835 folio 94 page 35. 3. Hi again all This might be a long shot, but I have just looked up 24 Robinson Terrace in 1901 to see if the family were still there and it's described as Uninhabited/In Occupation, inbetween 24 and 25 it seems to say Oddfellows Arms, which sounds like a pub name? Would a Beer house have a name which would be transcribed on a census? Is there anywhere I might get more information on this? I can't find the family anywhere on the 1901 census, I think they may have been hiding LOL However I have found the family of Margaret Murrell (nee Coutts) second husband living at number 23 Robinson Terrace in 1901. Many thanks Sarah On 17/12/2007, S J <[email protected]> wrote: > > > Thanks again Stan > > It would appear the Sunderland license records have not survived, so am > back to square one searching for more information on William Murrell. I note the previous answers. This is simply a little anecdote I think subscribers to this List may be interested in. Several years ago the Sunderland Branch of the NDFHS used to meet in Murton Street, in what was then the RAFA Club, but which has now become a Hell's Angels Club (!). I'm not sure of the number but some of the experts on the List may know what it must be. One of our speakers was quite dumfounded when he turned up. He had been told the address but had only half believed it and when he arrived he said that his family had lived there in the nineteenth century! I cannot now recall his surname, except that it was not one of those already mentioned. When he wrote up his family history and deposited a copy with the NFDHS Library at Bolbec Hall (as I hope we all have done, or will do eventually, to preserve the information for the foreseeable future) he called it "Return to Murton Street". Perhaps that will tell our experts who it is I am thinking of! Geoff Nicholson
