I went to St Mary's School from 1942 to 1948 and the picture on the web site doesn't do it justice. The yard was asphalt right down to the School Caretakers house on the right hand corner, looking at the bujilding and was way past the road in the photograph. There were large front gates and it was fronted by a large set of railing,. on three sides it had very high walls. The infants school was to the right and the entrance was on the right of the building in the picture. There was an entrance on the left side of the building also. The grounds to the left of the main block had an underground shelter dug into it during and after the war, it was covered in earth. It was out of bounds to the kids. I know I was strapped by the head mistress (Sister Mary Anslem) a number of times for being on the mound. There is a better and fuller picture somewhere out there on the net. I had a copy once but lost it when my computer crashed. Regards John Travers

Hi Alan, I think Michael was there when I started and he was a co-ordinator. I recall him engaged in some kind of project that entailed recording and documenting stained glass in churches across the town. I called in at the Donnison School last week and met an ex-WHCG colleague who I hadn't seen for 25 years! If that wasn't scary enough, someone showed me a photograph of us all together in the office, which was located in the former St Mary's Primary School (then part of Sunderland Polytechnic). Hi Alan, Wearside Historic Churches Group (WHCG), as far as I can remember, was funded through some government initiative and I think that those who worked for it did so for one year. I left before my year was completed to work for a youth training organisation. I think I may have been a year out with my previous dates and think it was 1984 when I joined, leaving in 1985. I don't know for certain what happened to the collection of photographs and records, but I was always under the impression that it had gone to Tyne & Wear Archives. One of those who worked at the WHCG later became involved with the Sunderland Antiquarian Society, and as I mentioned in the previous posting, another of my colleagues went on to set up and establish Living History Northeast (I think they have a website) and she's still involved with that organisation. David - the final section of 'Buildings and Beliefs' includes the following: "FINALLY ..... Individual churches sometimes produce their own histories, and the Wearside Historic Churches Group has published others. The Group (at St Mary's Building, Polytechnic) has a collection of records and photographs. Much more material of importance and interest is in the Local Studies Room at Sunderland Central Library. ...." It is possible that the group ceased to function at about the time that the Polytechnic became the Universit. It would be interesting to learn where their collection of records and photographs went to. Alan Vickers. Get 50% off Norton Security- http://www.tiscali.co.uk/securepc
Wearside Historic Churches Group is no more. I worked for them 1985/86 as a photographer and I was led to believe that whatever material they had collated was handed over to Tyne & Wear Archives. The person who set up Living History Northeast (based in the Donnison School in Sunderland's East End) was there at the same time as myself and she can still be contacted through Living History Northeast. Regards David Allan.

Hi David, There is a chapter on The Salvation Army, Roker Avenue, Corps No.2, in "More Monkwearmouth Memories, Book No. 3" published by Monkwearmouth Local History Group. Which Union Congregational Church do you mean? It looks as though Wearside Historic Church Group is defunct, as their last publication appears to have been in 1986. Would the Union Workhouse and the Sunderland Workhouse be one and the same ? I have a Thomas Stoddart died in the Union Workhouse in 1866 and a John Lamb in the Sunderland Workhouse in 1887 I know previous posts have said that the workhouse was also a hospital and dying there would not necessarily mean the person lived there -would that be right in both cases ? Cheers Pat & Derek
