    2. Lynne
    3. Hello out there! The end of RootsWeb lists is just around the corner. If you want to make sure anyone reading the archives in future can find you, be sure to post your interests (surnames in all caps; first names, dates, and locations if you chose) and your munged email address to the RootsWeb lists to which you subscribe before 29 February. There are now hundreds of lists/groups on Groups.io that have moved from RootsWeb. You can search for a group at https://groups.io/ and then click on "Find or Create a Group." Many RootsWeb admins have added the word "RootsWeb" to the descriptions of their new groups, so if your first attempt doesn't find the right group, trying adding the keyword RootsWeb to your search. There's also a group just to announce new family research lists, RootsWeb Announce. Search the messages there to find a group. It's been a pleasure administering this list. I hope to see many of you on Groups.io or on the Ancestry/RootsWeb message boards. Take care and best of luck with your research. 3. Way back when RootsWeb was acquired there was a promise that support would be continued and would continue to be free indefinitely. Most people would have forgotten about this promise or not known about this by now. That is why they feel they can discontinue support now. 1. [ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND] Christmas presents for family historians
    2. Lynne
    3. Still shopping for holiday gifts? Maybe a book would be the right present for your favourite family historian. Over on LancsGen, "Pitfalls and Possibilities in Family History Research" written by Pauline M. Litton has been recommended. Looks like the book is out of print, but there's a version on CD that's still available and, if you prefer printed format, a used copy or two might be available. I've just viewed a presentation by Constance Knox at Genealogy TV of "Five Genealogy Books Everyone Should Have" on YouTube. It can be watched at <https://tinyurl.com/r5g8tje> where Connie briefly describes the value of the five books, which are Evidence Explained, by Elizabeth Shown Mills The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy, by Blaine Bettinger Genealogy Standards, by The Board for Certification of Genealogists Professional Genealogy, editor Elizabeth Shown Mills Mastering Genealogical Proof, by Thomas W. Jones Family Photo Detective, by Maureen Taylor These all sound very useful, but some of these books are rather expensive. By the way, you can read more about Genealogy TV at <https://genealogytv.org/> or subscribe to the YouTube broadcasts (free) at <https://tinyurl.com/r5g8tje> or on any other of Genealogy TV's YouTube presentations. Do you have any recommendations for Christmas presents for family historians? Please share! Lynne

    1. [ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND] High Court Records of Scotland
    2. Lynne
    3. I was reading a blog about High Court Records in Scotland, as one does, and came across an interesting bit which I've never thought about: in addition to the info about the criminal him/herself, the records frequently contain victim names and other information which might be relevant to research in other locations. For example, a quick search of the records for Lancashire came up with 618 hits, Manchester resulted in 1241 hits, Lincolnshire 195 hits, Durham 1335 hits, Wiltshire 123 hits, and Yorkshire 871 hits. The blog is an interesting read and can be found at https://tinyurl.com/yyptnomt Information about and instructions for searching the High Court records can be found at <https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/guides/high-court-criminal-trials> and the search screen can be found at <http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/search.aspx>. Because my ancestors all led exemplary lives and were never victims of crimes <g>, I didn't find any mention of them after a quick search, but maybe you'll get lucky. Here's hoping. Lynne

    1. [ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND] Probate Registry reduces prices
    2. Lynne
    3. The cost of obtaining a will from the Probate Registry has been reduced to £1.50 for downloaded copies. From <https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate>: "Find a probate record, also known as a ‘grant of representation’, for someone who died after 1857. "Probate gives someone the legal right to deal with a deceased person’s property, money and possessions (their ‘estate’). "A new probate record will be online approximately 14 days after probate has been issued. "There’s a different process in Scotland and Northern Ireland. "You can use this service to: - search for a probate record in England and Wales - check if probate has been issued - check the type of probate issued - order a copy of a probate record (including a will, if there is one) "Each copy of a probate record ordered online costs £1.50. "It can take up to 10 working days for you to receive your documents. "Before you start "Wills and probate records from 1858 to 1996 "If you cannot find the record you’re looking for, check the years after the person died. These records are stored under the year the grant was issued, rather than the year of death. "To find the will of someone who died in the early 1990s, you may need to check the records that cover 1996 onwards. "Not all probate records contain a will. Check the type of grant of representation when you search. "The grant types that contain a will include: - ‘Probate’ or ‘Grant and Will’ - ‘Admon with Will’ or ‘Grant and Will’ "‘Administration (Admon) or Grant’ does not contain a will. "Search for a probate record by post Download and fill in form PA1S to search for a probate record by post. Send it to the address on" the form. "It costs £1.50 for a search by post. This includes a copy of the probate record and will (if there is one). "You should get a response within 4 weeks. "If the person died in the last 6 months "Probate may not have been granted yet. You can use form PA1S to ask to be sent a copy of a probate if it’s granted in the next 6 months. This is called a ‘standing search’. It costs £10. "You can extend the standing search after 6 months." Happy searching! Lynne
