    1. ACCENTS
    2. Good afternoon, List! I have followed the discussion about accents with great interest. In 1947, the family moved from Lancashire to Dorset. I suppose that I must have spoken 'Lancashire' then, although each town had and still has its clearly defined and easily recognisable, to the Lancastrian native, characteristics of speech. We lived in the heart of the glorious countryside between Broadwindsor and Crewkerne, but I must have taken to the Dorset accent like a duck to water, as I never noticed that it was different. One thing that I did remember was when my Dad bought petrol during the journey - that memory has never left me. It must have been somewhere near Worcester that he bought those three gallons. The lad who served us advised that the account was 'foive and noinepence! in proper money (five shillings and ninepence, or about 29 pence for the modern generation's benefit!). Can anyone else remember when petrol cost one and elevenpence a gallon? Recent return visits to the beautiful county have shown me that the accent is still strong in West Dorset. perhaps this is because of the relative isolation, which has kept the county mercifully free of that abomination of 'Estuary English' and the dumbing down of our wonderful English heritage. It was huge source of regret that we had to return to Lancashire, but my time in Dorset remains a blessed memory for which I ever grateful. Iain, Brampton, Cumbria.

    3. Hi all, I have found the accent thread very interesting to a point but now feeling somewhat grumpy in B. C.that it goes on and on. And I do have some recall of the list admin asking that it terminate. Would it not be a good topic to discuss on one of the any and all topics sites for those who wish to continue? 3. No it was DORSET list admin who asked for it to be continued on Dorset life, something about it not being connected to genealogy, it has more to do with the way our folks lived than many of the messages that appear. Sorry Iain the cheapest I can remember is half crown, but when I started buying it was 3 gallons for a quid, happy days!! 3. My apologies to Geoff and all in that case. Perhaps my gremlin has switched lists on me as I could have sworn (obviously mistaken) that I was on the Dorset list rather than the Dorset life list. 3. ah but, the regional accents are connected to genealogy in that what one rector heard when recording say a baptism, might be something different heard by another more local chap. Hence we have variations of surnames and some almost completely distorted. Now I shall add my twopenny worth regarding accents, in particular the Dorset accent. Both my elder children (aged 13 and nearly 18) were, like me, born in London and while they have had the London twang in their ears since they were babes, since living in beautiful sunny Weymouth (last 11 years), both now have some definitely Dorset pronounciations. Where I say grass (said as grarse - Queen's English you know as she lives in London too), they say grass like gr-ass; Dance - I say darnce, they say danse. They come out with the strangest words too and I have come to realise they are "local" words unheard of in London. My dear Dorset born cousin with a broad, deepest Dorset accent, said to me when I moved here "you'll soon lower the tone of the neighbourhood with an accent like yours!", but I have been told that the Londoness has mellowed over the years, although I can still bring it on ;-) Know wot I mean like? 1. Locating Place name ~help please
    2. Mike & Sally Wills
    3. Hello List I am really stuck on this Dorset place name, I hope someone closer to home can help me please. I am trying to establish the birth place of the wife of Isaac Adlem born 1816 / 18 Tollard royal Wilts, On various records including census returns it is noted as: Quintame ~ Quaintance ~ Quintence ~ Ilberton ( Ibberton ) Parish ~ Bryanston . I have only come up with Quainton Dorset & Quinton Dorset, another thought is maybe it is a farm or house name. Just to make matters more interesting she is sometimes known as Sarah or Jane or Sarah J. which gives cause to suspect this may be two seperate wives, though the age remains fairly constant. Unless your local knowledge can link any of the above names & make some sense, fingers well and truly crossed as I am stumped Kind regards Sally Stainer Wills ~ W. Australia OPC Ashmore Dorset.
