Hi Maurine Agree with Brian, but would also add that some of the men who went from Dorset to Newfie would be taken on in the Spring by the Poole merchants who financed the vessel ; would work their passage across the Pond, spend the Summer working for the ship owner on the Grand Banks, or where ever, and then remain in North America when the vessel returned to Poole towards the end of the year. So, if he could have afforded the fare, he might have travelled as a passenger, but if not, he may well have worked his passage.
