    3. Hello Listers: Does anyone have an Ann VEAL in their background, circa 1780's? I'm sure this is the correct spelling of the name of a lady mentioned in a document I am transcribing. I think this is her married name but I haven't been able to locate anything that matches in the way of a marriage of an Ann to someone by the name of VEAL in Christchurch. 1. [DOR-LIFE] New Scammell book
    2. Helen Jones
    3. One of our subscribers, Tony Billings, has written a book entitled "The Scammell Story" which is the story of the Scammell family who founded the Scammell Lorry business. He tells me that the book contains family, local and Scammell Company history. The Scammell family in question came from Donhead St Mary just over the Dorset border into Wiltshire. Many of the branches of the Scammell family came from North East Dorset/South East Wiltshire/South Somerset so there is much local interest here. Tony's book however is more than a family story - he is an ex employee of Scammell lorries who found he had a family connection to the company quite by chance! If you would like more information about the book, which Tony is publishing in May, please contact him direct on tandb.housedors@ic24.net Tony has been writing this book for some time now and has been in contact with myself and other Scammell researchers via Rootsweb lists in the process. As you may know, Rootsweb has a non commercial policy and so Tony cannot use the lists to advertise this book himself. Thus please use the email address above to get in touch with Tony if you are interested. He can send you a flier with full details. Congratulations to Tony - it is no mean feat to write a book. I have been writing my family story for years now but don't think I would be brave enough to take the plunge and publish ! 2. Helen Jones
    3. Thanks for all the replies. I have considered this and have come to the conclusion that I must take the 'blame'. After all, it was my typo which resulted in the wrong date, and all that the Registrar did was try to be helpful and find me the nearest match! She probably didn't know that my very rare name was the most common name in this tiny village, and I expect she thought she was doing me a good turn by searching, unasked, until she came to match! She couldn't read my mind and know that 52 was age at death not the year of death! Besides, I will need to order for certificates from this office in the future, so why uspet her for the sake of £6.50!! At the end of the day, Brian is right. Registry Offices do not exist for the benefit of family historians (though the revenue the service gets from us must be welcome) and I have always had excellent and courteous service from every office I have dealt with in England and Wales.
