This is the last will and testament of me Jane WALDEN of " Sourton Salecote ?" in the county of Dorset widow whereby I give and bequeath my children James John and Sarah the wife of John Stevens and George Walden the sum of £40 each . To my son George and also to Mr Thomas Penny of Stourton Paincote ? afsd I bequeath the sum of £40in trust for my son William and to be paid him not at once but at such times and in such proportions as they in their discretion shall think fit. To Richard Walden the illegitimate son of my said daughter Sarah I give the sum of £4 And as to the residue of my personal estate subject to the payment of £10 each to his two sons Henry and Alfred to be paid them on their attaining the age of 21 but keeping the sums at interest in them in the meantime in a Saving Bank and I give and bequeath the same to my son George whom I appoint my sole executor but it is my will that my son William shall have all my household goods and furniture which I have in my house where I now live but not which is in my late brother`s house. Witness my hand this 16th Jan 1837 , the mark of Jane Walden, witnesses Thos Fooks, jr, Thos Penny. Will proved London 16 August 1837 by the oath of George Walden the son and sole executor. My grandfather was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire in 1854, spent the first 21 years of his life in England and the next 30 or so travelling round the world living variously in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and, possibly, South Africa too, returning to this country about 1908. He lived initially at various addresses in the Chideoak, Pokesdown and Bournemouth area then moved to Salcome Regis and finally to Sidmouth where he died in 1934. He went bankrupt in 1887 whilst living in New Zealand where he was a sewing machine importer. In 1892 he applied for a patent for an improved sheep shearing machine in Australia and New Zealand. I have obtained a certain amount of information about his life and activities after his return to England but several gaps remain. He was an engineer according to his death certificate but had a wide range of interests. He had an apple orchard whist living at Sunbeam, Sid Road, Salcombe Regis and invented a cider apple sorting machine and a process for preserving apples; I believe he applied for patents for both. He was keenly interested in archaeology and a number of his discoveries were reported in various local and national papers between 1909 and 1929. He set up public museums at his homes, including one at Bluebell, a 22 acre hillside property at Bulverton Hill, Sidmouth. The exhibits included books, manuscripts and flint tools, mostly spear points and axes which were found there in large numbers. He loved wildlife and flowers and was also a writer and published his own book of poems 'The Inglenook' in about 1919. It appears that he went bankrupt for the second time in the 1920s. I am seeking further information about: (a) his homes and whether they still exist, (b) his inventions and whether they were patented, (c) his second bankruptcy, if in fact it did occur, and what caused it, (d) the museum and what happened to its contents, and (e) 'The Inglenook' - is there a copy available anywhere? I wonder if any lister can throw any more light on David's activities during the period following his return to live in Dorset and Devon. Hi Having just discovered that 6 of the 8 children of George and Caroline Billet(nee Besant) of Bere Regis emigrated to Monroe,Ashtabula,Ohio bewteen about 1839 and 1869, I am now interested to read a little more about emigration to Amica. Be on your guard - there seems to be a virus epidemic! Bugbear is on the loose again - had two yesterday There is a new worm which affects Windows NT, 2000 and XP - MPBLAST -comes with a message about microsoft or Bill Gates. This apparantly sweeping the internet and causing havoc on unprotected computers Then there is one which comes with a message saying your email address is about to expire and to click on the attachment to find out what to do. This is a virus. I am not sure what it is called. These forge addresses using parts of genuine addresses from the victim's in box. There is no point in sending off an angry reply to the person whose address sent it to you - the address is not a real one and the people whose addresses have been stolen to make the new address have absolutely nothing to do with the virus. The viruses may also attach themselves to genuine messages in a victim's in-box making the message look bona fide. Just do not open attachments - even if you recognise the sender's name. If you are expecting an attachment from someone, check back first with a new message to confirm that the attachment you have received is genuine. If you want to send an attachment to someone, send them a separate email first warning them Mark all your messages as read. Only keep essential contacts in your address book Do not even think about accessing the internet without virus protection. The teddy bear hoax is also still around. I can't pretend to know a lot about the two new viruses - I suggest that you look on the website of your virus protection company or check out the Sophos or Symantec site. If you have the sort of virus protection that needs updating manually, do it NOW! This is a query which came up at work this week. Where does the Dorset motto "Who's Afeard" come from - what is its history, meaning and significance. We have asked the Record Office, The Society of Dorset Men and Dorchester Reference library - no-one knows but there was a suggestion that it could be something to do with William Barnes. Putting it into a Google search only brings up the Dorset Record Office publication of the same name. Does anyone on the list know? 'Who's afear'd' was adopted by the Society of Dorset Men in 1905 at the suggestion of Thomas Hardy. It runs until Friday this week, is held in the village hall and costs £2 per adult. They have some local history books on sale and people on hand to discuss family and local history with visitors.
