Hi Davy I did not request this information but sure glad I'm a lister because I appreciate any historical information of the area. My husbands grandfather was born in Charmouth. So thanks for sharing. Susan Cook Florida USA
An interesting site I have just visited. _http://catalogue.bl.uk/_ (http://catalogue.bl.uk/) Select the Search option, input Weymouth as a Word From Title and some very interesting publications are listed. Also searched by Any word for Melcombe Regis and Portland Dorset. Other key word(s) would, I expect, produce similar items of interest John Rogan in Wiltshire.

Hi, I assume this comes under the heading of Dorset Life. As a child I can remember visits to my ggAunts in Fortuneswell and eating Portland Dough buns. I have at last found a bakery that makes them and hope to get them to send me some through the post. However, does anyone know the origin of these buns? Or perhaps the recipe? Are they just peculiar to Portland or all of Dorset? Hello, I am new to this list and relatively new to the main Dorset list. My name is Roland Elliott and I am researching my family which have been in Portland for some years. Many of them were Mariners and I have noticed them appearing in various other places in Britain and have naturally assumed that thisas due to their profession. Has anyone else noticed the same with ancestors that were mariners? I am looking at 1800's through to early 1900's and based around Portland and Weymouth with ancestors turning up at Swansea, Brixham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Liverpool and Glasgow. Hi Theodore Brunell, a native of Corsica, who ran a photographic business in Weymouth in the 1850s. He also worked for short periods in Dorchester and Poole. He died in 1861 aged 39. Particularly interested to know if any of his daguerreotypes or other photographs have survived. Also interested in details and whereabouts of his studios etc.. Many thanks for any information David Lane Weymouth UK
Hi, I am new to the list and need some help with place names in Dorset please. I have Winterborn, Anderson, Kingston, Fordington. All the place names taken from census images I have received. If someone could point me in the right direction as to where these places are, I would be very grateful. Also, on the 1871 image, there is a Sarah Toomer, with her husband Robert, saying born what looks like Tonton, Dorsetshire, could someone please confirm? Many thanks Ann

Hi I have just come into possession of a detailed drawing of Wimborne Minster. If anybody is interested in a copy get back to me. Regards Bob-Trafalgar-Australia.
I agree with you Ray. This list is interesting even if you had no particular interest in the subject matter before. The same cannot be said for the other list where other people's lookup requests and subsequent discussions of same are totally boring. The Dorset Life list covers general Dorset issues and although much less busy than the family history lists it generates far better quality discussions. I don't want to see it swamped with endless "will SKS look up ......" requests which to a great extent is what has happened with the others. The quantity on those has risen slightly compared to a few years ago but the quality has really plummeted. Regards Ray Collins Weymouth, Dorset.

Some time back, I did ask on the DORSET list if anyone was aware of a Susan VALENCE born about 1810 that was the likely spelling of one of my great great grandmothers and mother of Elizabeth Ann BAKER. I received some quick and prompt responses - e.g. Susan VALENS born in 1810 Wyke Regis appeared to fit the bill. However, now I'm stuck with another name i.e. MABB or MABBE. Of course with the variations game, other spellings of VALENCE are VALLANCE & VALLENCE. Susan (daughter of James VALENCE & Margaret MABBE). Now, where am I going to find the time to research the MABB family tree. Isn't this never ending search for fresh new old names exciting. But, isn't determining what village life was like for the folks just as rewarding. But, for many I'm sure Dorset Life was no bed of roses. Brian Zelley
I'm in agreement! Other lists do get bogged down at times with endless requests for look-ups. That is not at issue, but the endless follow-up messages by all and sundry sometimes leads to excessive repetition with limited substance. In closing, my line for Remembrance Day: They say, "Silence is Golden", but two minutes of silence on November 11 th. is priceless. Brian Zelley
