    3. One of my great grandfathers was John SKELTON - 27.3.1836 baptised Loddiswell - 10.3.1916 died Lower Street, West Alvington, buried 15.3.1916 West Alvington. A photograph of him outside his cottage is on my living room wall. He married Mary NEWLAND - 8.7.1838 baptised West Alvington - 19.11.1880 died West Alvington (buried 24.11.1880). Mary NEWLAND was the daughter of Thomas (a labourer) and Elizabeth It is that Thomas who is my problem. I know that he was married by banns and with the consent of friends on 21.11.1826 to Elizabeth GILLARD in West Alvington (both signed with a mark and were of this parish). The witnesses were William NEWLAND (signed with a mark) and Philip ELLIS Was this William my Thomas's father? If so I also have a William NEWLAND - 23.10.1776 baptised Malborough - who was married 2.4.1799 in Plymouth Charles to Dinah PEARCE. This couple had at least three children:- Mary Pearse NEWLAND - 17.1.1802 baptised South Huish - she married Michael OSBORN - 26.7.1801 baptised Kingsbridge Dinah NEWLAND - 10.3.1810 baptised West Alvington Elizabeth Pearse NEWLAND - 5.5.1816 baptised West Alvington I am aware of four children of Thomas NEWLAND and Elizabeth nee GILLARD - all were baptised in West Alvington and in each case Thomas was described as a labourer 27.5.1827 - John NEWLAND 19.5.1829 - Elizabeth NEWLAND 8.7.1838 - Mary NEWLAND - my great grandmother 8.12.1844 - Ann NEWLAND Regards, Jack Steer Banbury
