Morning, Could someone please help with the likely interpretation of the following please. Richard EDMONDS alias PERRETT died c1627 of Chivelstone. [Will Admin] Would this mean he was base born but the fathers names was PERRETT or was his mother married to a PERRETT then remarried an EDMONDS with Richard taking his mother's newly married name? I also have another one, John EDMONDS alias PEROTT who was alive in Stokenham in 1560. I imagine them to be brothers. Confusing!!!! Bev. Bev Any of those just might be the case. However, another somewhat obscure interpretation is possible, particularly as you have found repetitions in different generations. This may be related to inheritance of copyhold land that passed, at some point in time, through a female line. As the title was granted by virtue of a copy of an entry in the manorial court rolls (hence 'copyhold'), a person who might subsequently inherit tended to wish to enhance his prospects by using the surname that originally appeared in the manor court rolls. Not a great deal of difference to the hyphenated surnames of today.
