Hi, My gg gf's brother, Walter Painter Moore, was found in Thurlestone, Kingsbridge, Devonshire, England, 1851 British census, working for Joseph Hannaford. Address, North Upton. Does anyone know this family? I am curious in Walter was just a hired hand or if there was a family relationship. I am also looking for anyone connected to the Moore family of Kingsbridge. Also anyone connected to the Port, Painter or Ford families. Thanks, Kathie

Hi Kathie, I have MOOREs going back to around 1780 in South Milton, near Kingsbridge, Upton Farm Hamlet (Mary MOORE, 1851 census) and Dartmouth, but no PORT, PAINTER or FORDs. From what I can find, the MOOREs of South Milton were agricultural labourers, servants and mariners, and the family moved up to Northampton in groups during the 1840s and 50s. They may not be your people, but they may perhaps be related, as there was some movement around the Kingsbridge area in those times. (there were 1300 plus MOOREs in Devon in 1851!) Regarding relationships, my own view is that families were known to one another locally at that time, and as work was difficult to come by, there would not necessarily be a "relationship" as such. I guess everyone's circumstances were different, though, so it's not easy to tell, unless you can find a previous marriage or other evidential link.
