I have a copy of the will of John Dinnis dated 22 Mar 1822 in which he bequeaths the sum of 5 shillings to each of three children. In snooping around on the net I have found some other wills (unrelated to my family) in which the sum of 5 shillings is bequeathed to various people. Is there something magic about the sum of 5 shillings? And can anyone tell me the value of that sum in the early 1800's in pounds, euros, or whatever? Just curious.
