Sorry if this has already appeared, but I probably not, as I think it went to the wrong address. I am researching the Tucker family of Bridport, Dorset. For a short time the family business of Richard Tucker and Son was represented in Tuckenhay. The business was involved with the processing of flax and hemp making sailcloth, rope etc. I am not sure when it started in Tuckenhay (but would like to?) but I believe it closed in the 1830s. It may have occupied a site of a later paper mill. AbrahamTucker (born Bridport 1761 died Tuckenhay 1810) ran the mill, maybe assisted by visiting members of the family from Bridport and probably ran by his son after his death. I have found reference on Genuki to an Abraham Tucker being responsible for bringing gas to Tuckenhay (however if same, date (1878) is wrong). Further refs. are on the Malsters Arms website, where it gives no names, but says it was the first gas lighting in the world and Devon.gov.uk website refers to the gas house being built in 1806 (which would be approx right date for our Abraham). Can anyone give me any further information on the early gas lighting in Tuckenhay, who was responsible and whether it really was the first in the world? I can't get to Devon Records Office unfortunately. Sue
