One of my great grandfathers was John SKELTON - 27.3.1836 baptised Loddiswell - 10.3.1916 died Lower Street, West Alvington, buried 15.3.1916 West Alvington. A photograph of him outside his cottage is on my living room wall. He married Mary NEWLAND - 8.7.1838 baptised West Alvington - 19.11.1880 died West Alvington (buried 24.11.1880). Mary NEWLAND was the daughter of Thomas (a labourer) and Elizabeth It is that Thomas who is my problem. I know that he was married by banns and with the consent of friends on 21.11.1826 to Elizabeth GILLARD in West Alvington (both signed with a mark and were of this parish). The witnesses were William NEWLAND (signed with a mark) and Philip ELLIS Was this William my Thomas's father? If so I also have a William NEWLAND - 23.10.1776 baptised Malborough - who was married 2.4.1799 in Plymouth Charles to Dinah PEARCE. This couple had at least three children:- Mary Pearse NEWLAND - 17.1.1802 baptised South Huish - she married Michael OSBORN - 26.7.1801 baptised Kingsbridge Dinah NEWLAND - 10.3.1810 baptised West Alvington Elizabeth Pearse NEWLAND - 5.5.1816 baptised West Alvington I am aware of four children of Thomas NEWLAND and Elizabeth nee GILLARD - all were baptised in West Alvington and in each case Thomas was described as a labourer 27.5.1827 - John NEWLAND 19.5.1829 - Elizabeth NEWLAND 8.7.1838 - Mary NEWLAND - my great grandmother 8.12.1844 - Ann NEWLAND Regards, Jack Steer Banbury

Hi gang, I have managed to find some time and extract a few more entries from the Exeter Marriage Licences. The years cover 1739-1745 so if you have anyone that you can't place or can't find a marriage for then I may just have something for you. I have concentrated on the area around Stokenham to Totness with a few from Dartington and Buckfastleigh. Cheers Bev
I would love to hear from any descendants of ANDREW CALLARD (born c. 1854), my great grandfather. In 1881 he was living at Truestreet Cottages, BERRY POMEROY with his wifew SARA JANE (nee Hawkins). The only children then were EMMA (Emily), POLLY& WILLIAM H. His age was then given as 26 but it is not unusual for these ages to differ. In 1901, the family was living in St John's Terrace, Totnes. He was aged 49. they had more children by then and living in the household were POLLY, EDITH KATE, JAMES, NICHOLAS & GERTRUDE. EMMA (or Emily) was by then married (to GEORGE WINSOR) and WILLIAM was working away as a groom. Val

Tim, One of the children of William STEER and Mary Ann nee DIMENT was Harriet STEER - 21.2.1841 baptised Stokenham, Devon Harriet was married on 23.3.1862 in Stokenham to Robert MITCHELL - 1833/4 born Stokenham. Robert MITCHELL was described as a farm labourer aged 17 in the 1851 census living with his parents Edward and Jane, which is the same household as your Mary Ann. I have some information about Robert and Harriet's descendents. Do you know any more about this Robert's ancestry? Hi Bev, Can you help me with Mary Ann's parents, who were they? She appears on the 1851 census for Stokenham, aged three, staying with her uncle Edward MITCHELL b. 1803 in Marlbourgh and his family. Edwards brothers were Robert b. 1807/1810 (1851 census) William b. 1812, widower (1851 census) John b. 1815 (1851 census) Williams wife was dead at the time of the 1851 census, and his four children were born in between 1833-1838, so it's perhaps unlikely that Mary Ann was his daughter. Also can you clear up the mystery for me of the wife of a Robert MITCHELL b.1807/1810 in Stokenham. According to the D.F.H.S. print out for marriages 1813 -1837, he married Caroline MACEY on 27/3/1831. In the 1851 census he was married to a Jane b. in Kingsteignton, and Caroline Macey MITCHELL was his daughter. B. 1838 Again in the 1871 census he was married to a Jane b. in Kingsteignton. Do you think he may have remarried before the 1851 census? Having named his daughter after his first wife and also his son was called Allen Macey MITCHELL b. 1835. Any light you can throw on the subject would be much appreciated. Tim Mitchell. (12731) D.F.H.S.

Strange that the Southams mailing list is working fine yet the Devon one has been out of action for over a week? I have found a possible branch of my family in London in 1871, they were Effers but the transcription came through as Epper! However the place of birth for the head and his wife are in Devon but the enumerator must have just made the names up! Can anyone give me an idea what these towns should have been? Hi There Thankyou to everyone that replied to my mail regarding the Creber name. You have been of some help. Regards Vivienne
Many thanks to Beverley, Sandra, Roland, Ray, Michelle & Joan, who have all offered suggestions. However, I am still no further down the track. I have had over 18 different PR's through the LDS thus far & am still searching (not only for CALLARD/DISTIN). I suppose I was hoping to find someone who said "I have a ........ CALLARD marrying a ........ DISTIN" - one can always live in hope!! A further tip for the IGI - if anyone is interested. I searching for a surname, (first name unknown), as well as filling in any, or all of "region, country, state" boxes, one can further refine the search by putting in an event, in my instance, marriage (it will not allow anything more). This reduced the available options of CALLARD & region etc, from 1000's to 419 entries. I have just trawled through those looking at suitable males, but to no avail. Happy hunting John Wareham Central Coast NSW in Oz DEV names: CALLARD, COAD/CODD, COCKRAM, PENWILL, RADFORD & SCOBLE

There are several MITCHELMOREs and WALLISes in the IGI records for Stoke Fleming which should enable you to trace Harriet [Wills] MITCHELMORE's family back a generation and identify some of her siblings. But unfortunately I cannot help you with modern descendants. I have copied this message to the MITCHELMORE-UK list in case anyone there has any links to your MITCHELMOREs. Good luck!
