    1. Re Florence OLDREIVE of Cornworthy
    2. Beverley Edmonds
    3. Hi Folks, Have just received this answer from a very astute lister. Hi, Just read your posting re Florence OLDREIVE. In my opinion, the one year old from the 1881 census, daughter of John and Edna OLDREIVE can be found in the 1891 and 1901 census still with Mum and Dad. Consequently, unless the marriage never happened, not the same girl. How interesting, in the 1901 census Robert Rowe of Halwell is the son of a farmer. On the next farm is William Oldreive. Not an answer, just an observation! Pete So there you go. It never occured to me to check the 1891 or 1901 census something I should have done before firing away my question. I can hear the walls rumbling already!!!!!!! Cheers Bev. Edmonds Toowoomba, Qld, Australia OPC Dartington, Dean Prior, East Allington, Halwell, South Pool, Totnes & Stokenham, Devon, Eng. 1. Two Peter MITCHELMOREs in the South Hams
    2. John Mitchelmore
    3. I have a death certificate for Peter MITCHELMORE who died from measles, aged 4 months, on 24 June 1838. His mother was Mary; his father was not named but was a labourer. They lived at Burlestone. As far as I know I am not related to him. If you think he is related to you, please let me know and I will gladly forward the certificate to you. The other Peter MITCHELMORE is my great great grandfather, the son of John MITCHELMORE and Susanna WILLS. He was baptised at Slapton on 16 April 1797, married Margaret MARCH at Stoke Fleming on 27 March 1821 and moved to Harberton c1829. They had nine children: Thomas (1822-1888) Ann (1825-?) Margaret (c1828-?) Susan (1830-?) John (1832-?) Robert (1833-?) Elizabeth (1836-?) Mary (1839-1918) Jane (1842-?). He was a mariner in 1822 and an agricultural labourer in 1832. I should be grateful for any further information about him or his family. John Mitchelmore Hertfordshire England

    3. Hi all, Sometime you might like to visit the interesting Web site devoted to changes in the population of Britain 1801-2001:- http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/ I had a look at the South Hams and found some interesting information. 1. In 1851 15% of the population were "attending Wesleyan Methodists", and 8% were "attending Baptists", which rather suggests that a quarter of our ancestors may not have had their children baptised in a Church of England parish church? No doubt this explains why so many baptisms are difficult to find, even though a later census indicates that a person was "born" in that place/parish"? 2. Also in 1850, the infant mortality rate was 10%, that is deaths before the age of 12 months. With most families of the period having around 4 children this distressing figure would suggest that up to half of our ancestral families were likely to have suffered one infant death? And this in addition to all the other deaths from smallpox, cholera, typhoid, etc., due in no small part to the insanitary conditions and poor water supplies of that time. Cheers, Ray

    2. Michael Steer
    3. With so few records from Diptford available on IGI, it's been difficult to find out anything much about the CUTMORE family of Diptford, and South Hams generally. I'm particularly interested in Frances CUTMORE who married Joseph SMARIDGE at Diptford in 1783. If anyone has CUTMORE interests, or is able to provide names and dates of parents and siblings for Frances I'd be delighted to hear from them. Best wishes, Mike.

    3. Hi all, Have just completed the 1841 census transcript of West Alvington - such an important parish in the Kingsbridge district. Apologies for not doing this earlier but I'd forgotten it was incomplete & limited to just a tiny corner of the parish in Malborough village! I'll add the data to the main South Hams 1841 index in a day or two.
