Gail, I've had a look at the 1871 and the following appear. I've added the entry number for each inmate and there are some consecutive numbers that would indicate a family relationship. Unfortunately the Institution returns didn't include family relationships and there are some that are not consecutive. Is it possible Albert GIBY is really Albert GRAY? I am trying to trace Murch ancestors of mine and one possible link may be with William Henry Murch (1799-1826) who married someone called Pepperill. His parents may have been Samson and Delia Murch. Do these names figure in anyone else's tree. Many thanks. Barbara Jones Wirral

I'm new to this list after communicating with Ray Osborn. Is anyone connected to Ann PARTRIDGE who was baptised 21 Jun 1789, Woodleigh? Ray sent me a scanned image of the parish register entry, but Ann's father's name is too faded or blurred to read. I would like to know her father's name and seek for possible siblings. Thanks, Joe Trewhella Godfrey, Illinois USA

All My great-uncle Arthur Wood (1879-1960s) lived in Harbertonford most of his life with his wife Bessie. Arthur is said to have been a Methodist lay preacher, and to have preached on the local 'circuit'. Does anyone have any information relating to my great-uncle. I am especially keen to know which circuit the chapel was in and where I might be able to find records for either the chapel or the whole circuit. Any help appreciated. Sue Rowbotham
I cannot remember if this site has been mentioned before, but Archaic Medical Terms - http://www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm has an index of many or most of those illnesses that appear on death certificates and mean precious little to me. Regards, Jack Steer Banbury
Hi, The 1891 census has niece Susannah BIRCH living with James EDMONDS. Susannah is recorded as born at South Brent aged 20 yrs. She is aged 12 yrs in 1881 also living with James and wife Maryann still at Brixham. Is she with her parents in 1871? That's something I would love to know if anyone has the time to look. Thanks so much. Cheers Bev. Edmonds Toowoomba, Qld, Australia OPC Dartington, Dean Prior, East Allington, Halwell, South Pool, Totnes & Stokenham, Devon, Eng. Barbara Wilson has been kind enough to send me a copy of the report of an inquiry by the Charity Commissioners held on 10.7.1908 that Earle Warth discovered in the DRO. It is interesting because it identifies the landowners from whom the land was bought in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Assuming that the Charity Commissioners were given accurate information, there seems to me to be no doubt that Henry STEER the younger sold the land for at least part of the burial ground at Ford to the trustees by deed dated 30.11.1793. It cost the trustees £5.7.0. The chapel was already in existence and had been built on land bought by John TOZER and William LIFE from William PRODAM. The report reads as though the 1793 STEER parcel of land was incorporated into the existing property with a wall built and owned by the trustees. The trustees listed in the 1793 deed were:- James TORRING senior James TORRING son of James TORRING senior Philip PRETTEJOHN Nathaniel PRETTEJOHN Philip PRETTEJOHN son of Nathaniel PRETTEJOHN Nathaniel GILLARD Nathaniel GILLARD the younger John PEARCE John PEARCE the younger John PRETTEJOHN William HEAD Edmund STEER son of the Henry STEER the younger who sold the land I wondered if Henry STEER the younger who died on 6.4.1808 aged 78 was buried in the graveyard with his wife Ann (died 4.5.1818 aged 94) and son George died 24.4.1826 aged 73). But I have no record of Henry's son Edmund. Is he also buried at Ford? Regards, Jack Steer Banbury

IN 1910 Frederick Sambrook(e) NEWLYN, age 32, married Edith Laura Adelaide MITCHELL, age 21. He was a Quarter Master, Sergeant North Staffordshire Regiment, & both living Devonport. Among their 3 children was Frederick H. Newlyn born Christchurch, 1921. He could still be alive, at this time, no marriage has been found. He would have been of an age, to serve in WW 2. He does not show in the Commonwealth War Graves Site. he, could, of course have died young, & does not show, or, is on one of those difficult to read Fiche, or, he may have emigrated. Nora Gladys Adeline Newlyn bn 1917, married CRAGO, died 1997. There is another son, possibly William. Does anyone have any info' about this family ? They are related to my late Grandmother Mary New Zealand
I received an e-mail recently from Paul Moir-Riches, commenting on a posting of mine on this forum I replied to the e-mail twice to the address cited, but both were returned to me. The answer to your question, Paul, is Yes : but I can not give any further details so publically. As ever, Philip Steer
Hi all, Can anyone help me solve a puzzle? There was more than one James BALL co-habiting/marrying, procreating, dying, etc., in the places that I'm interested in, namely parishes near to Kingsbridge during the years 1790-1841. Can someone please identify this James BALL:- 1818 Jul 23 James BALL a widower, married Amie(Amy, Amey, Emma) MAUNDER(S), a widow, at Dodbrooke. Both were OTP but I can't find any BALL children being baptised, nor a female BALL burial, in Dodbrooke for some years before this marriage.? Amy MAUNDER was born Amey CLARKE in Dodbrooke and was the widow of William MAUNDER of Dodbrooke(died 1813) whom she married in 1808. The couple had one child, Mary Clarke MAUNDER in Dodbrooke in 1810. James & Amy BALL(nee CLARKE) had two children in Salcombe, 1819 and 1821. This James BALL had died by 1841. There are two James BALL burials recorded in Malborough(including Salcombe residents)in the period 1821-1841:- James BALL of Salcombe, aged 69, buried 5 Jan 1836 James BALL of Higher Batson, aged 68, buried 25 Apr 1836 I have only one likely headstone inscript, from the Malborough parish churchyard:- James BALL, aged 68, 1 Feb 1836 And this one is located adjacent to other graves which I'm certain all belong to "my" BALL family - from my greatgrandma Elizabeth Mary BALL of Salcombe back through the James BALL, born 16 Jun 1767, who married Ruth JARVIS and begat children, continuously, from 1790 to 1807, with Ruth dying in 1829. Any ideas, please, on the mystery James BALL, a widower in 1818? Ray Osborn Rotorua, NZ

Thanks to the help of several people, I can now summarise the information I've assembled. If there are any other clues to these families from any source, I would be most grateful to hear. I have concluded that Christiana Pettigrew [ aged 61 in 1851] is the mother or aunt of William Pettigrew [1819-1876+]. Selina Davies, born 1846, is my great-grandmother.
