I found a baptism for Mary RANDALL in Sherford 11 Aug 1784, d/o Philip and Mary. I thought that looked OK, but in 1851 she said she was born in South Pool about 1788. Then a descendant told me there was another Mary RANDALL, baptised in South Pool 29 Oct 1788, d/o Nicholas and Mary. So, apparently, Mary from S Pool moved to Sherford before 1810. Were there two Maries there? Did her family move because Philip and Nicholas were related? Please can you help with the South Pool bit? Was Nicholas RANDALL married there, born there? Sherford marriages 1754-1812 don't seem to include any Philip RANDALL marriage. Perhaps Philip came from South Pool? (I do know about some RANDALLs in South Pool later in the 19th century, but they don't go back far enough.) Ray Osborne seems to be on holiday for a fortnight, so I'll put this on the lists, in case anyone else can help while I'm waiting! Best wishes Arthur

    3. I am looking for the birth of Thomas EASTERBROOK born about 1819 with parents Thomas and Elizabeth. He is recorded in censuses as born in Crabtree (Parish of Egg Buckland), but he does not appear on the registers there (but his brother John born 1824 does appear there). Thomas and Elizabeth were married in 1816 in Dittisham so the Torquay area is the most likely.

    3. Can anyone link to this COUCH - FORD family? Extracted from the Oxford DNB QUILLER- COUCH, Sir Arthur Thomas [pseud. Q] (1863-1944), writer and anthologist, was born on 21 November 1863 at Poul Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, the eldest of the five children of Thomas Quiller COUCH (1826-1884), physician, and his wife, Mary (d. 1901), daughter of Elias FORD, yeoman and his wife Theophilas of Abbotskerswell, near Newton Abbot, Devon. The QUILLERs and COUCHs had lived for generations in Polperro, Cornwall, earning their living largely from the sea. Q's grandfather Jonathan COUCH (1789-1870) was a doctor and noted naturalist. Educated at Newton Abbot College, Devon, and Clifton College, Bristol, QUILLER-COUCH won a classics scholarship to Trinity College, Oxford, in 1882. Q published nearly forty novels, short-story collections, and anthologies. In late March 1944 Q fell while avoiding a vehicle in Fowey, and on 12 May, at his house in Fowey, he succumbed to cancer of the mouth, brought on by a lifetime of smoking. He was buried in Fowey on 15 May. Regards, Jack Steer Banbury

    3. Alan, Some incidental information on the Luckhams at South Milton that may be of interest to you: At the death of my ancestor John Harris at 10am on the 14/6/1847 at Trutes, South Milton at the age of 89 years Agnes Luckham was present. At the death of Johns wife, Elizabeth some seven years earlier Jenny Luckham was present. Trutes is a house close to the church that still stands today. Truites in 1841 was a property owned by a William Roope Ilbert esq, and part occupied in that year by a William Steer. The property consisted of a cottage and courtlage, garden and orchard.I understand the cottage provided accommodation for three families. According to the 1841 census the Luckham family lived in a property adjoining my family. The Luckham family had a strong association with the area. Luckhams lane joins the Malborough to Kingsbridge road a hundred yards north of the Malborough cross roads where a tollgate existed, the toll being collected from the window of the last house on the right from Kingsbridge. Luckhams lane was known as the dodge, for people sneaked up it to avoid paying the Toll. Some other details that I have recorded are: PETITION, THURLESTONE, 9, 7, 1685, PHILLIP, LUCKHAM, FOR WAR PENSION, AGE 66 YEARS BAPTISM, SOUTH MILTON, 23, 6, 1793, JOHN, LUCKHAM, SON OF JOHN AND DORCAS CENSUS SOUTH MILTON, 1851, JAMES , LUCKHAM, RECORDED AS A TAILOR CENSUS SOUTH MILTON, 1851, JOHN , LUCKHAM, RECORDED AS A TAILOR CENSUS, SOUTH MILTON,1851, WILLIAM, LUCKHAM, RECORDED AS A TAILOR CENSUS SOUTH MILTON, 1851, WILLIAM , LUCKHAM, RECORDED AS A SHOPKEEPER I should add that the Harris family moved to South Milton from Aveton Gifford. Nicholas MOORE was my 2nd gt Grandfather by his second marriage (to Jane SARAH, after Mary died) - fairly simple, not as complicated as your lineage! I have a fair amount on the MOOREs between Nicholas and myself - happy to share if anyone else is working on them. Carolyn, I'm not sure that this is the correct John and Elizabeth as the names are so common, but a John LUSCOMBE married Elizabeth YABSLEY in Aveton Gifford, Devon on 1.11.1793 It may be that these were all their children although the eight year gap between the last two makes me think that there is a possibility that Richard was the son of a different John and Elizabeth LUSCOMBE. These are the baptisms that I have 26.7.;1795;Elizabeth ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 28.1.;1798;John ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 11.5.;1800;Thomas ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 24.4.;1803;Ann ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 23.6.;1805;William ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 19.6.;1808;George ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 17.3.;1811;James ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 31.1.;1819;Richard ;LUSCOMBE;Aveton Gifford, Devon;John LUSCOMBE;Elizabeth;40; 268;Ashford Thanks for the gravestone information. My grandfather Alfred Samuel STEER was born on 1.11.1878 at Waterhead, Aveton Gifford, Devon, the son of Eliza Jane LUSCOMBE, a single woman His parents were married by banns in Aveton Gifford on 25.1.1879 - Jarvis Veale STEER (bachelor of South Milton of full age, a labourer) and Eliza Jane LUSCOMBE (spinster of this parish, aged 20). Fathers - William STEER (labourer) and Samuel LUSCOMBE (labourer). Witnesses - Andrew STEER and Sarah STEER (Jarvis Veale's siblings). If anyone knows anything about Samuel, I'd love to hear, he is an enigma. 3. Bev, I've checked the baptism register for Loddiswell for STEPHENS from 1715 to 1724. There are three entries:- 24.3.1720/1 Ann STEPHENS daughter of Nicholas STEPHENS 11.9.1722 Elizabeth STEEVENS daughter of Nicholas and Joan STEEVENS 18.5.1724 Mary STEPHENS daughter of Nicholas STEPHENS If Teazy did exist (and I have my doubts) she was not baptised in Loddiswell in about 1720. 1. MALROLONSON & other names in a Will
    2. Beverley Edmonds
    3. Hi again, And during my clean-up yesterday I was going through all my Wills, you know the ones that are impossible to read. I have a Will for a Richard Edmonds GOODRIDGE 1833 which is totally unreadable. A very good friend read the Will on a film at the LDS and he was able to make out a few names. But once the copy was printed out it was all smudgy. I have no idea where Richard died. His daughter Ann seems to have marrried someone by the name of TRASH? Wilmot another daughter married someone by the name of MALROLONSON? Mary married a John A. ECKFORD? or similiar such name Amelia Sophia married SARSYER ??? " " " Sophia Amelia married a WELLS? Sorry, but I have no ages for these girls. One daughter Charlotte Laura who is not mentioned was baptised 1820 in Ashburton, died in Exeter in 1824 and buried at Ashburton. Has anyone come across any of these names, especially the MALROLONSON? I would love to be able to pick this name up in future census years. I have tried the 1851 census but didin't find any of them, maybe they all left Devon at some stage. Bev. 1. GEE family - Stokenham
    2. Tom Stevenson
    3. Earlier Bev was kind enough to help me with records from the Stokenham PR's. I have just returned from a weeks break at Torcross and spent a little time in the Kingsbridge local history resource room looking through some of the Stokenham PR's. I found several "buriel" records for members of the GEE family but unfortunately they do not have the age at death. Does anyone know of a resource that might be able to provide this information? The only thought that I had was to look in the cemetery but could not find anything of relevence - of course they may not have had headstones. Does anyone happen to know if there is a Stokenham cemetery plan and, if so, whether this might have the information I require and how can I access a copy. Tom Stevenson PS for Bev. Emails to your address keep bouncing but to let you know that I found the Solomon/Catherine(Jellard) marriage (3 Jan 1788) and probably Solomons parents marriage on 8 Nov 1763 (Solomon/Mary Lyfe).
