    3. I am a new subscriber to the list seeking information on Jane Frances Cook, born 1850 in Clyst St. George, Devon. She married James Hilton from Sharnbrook, Bedford in 1877 (I believe) and they had the following children: Thomas C., Frances E., Janet A., and Evelyn H. (taken from the 1901 census). If anyone has been doing research on the COOK family I would appreciate hearing from you. With thanks Eleanor Winnipeg, Canada

    1. BACKWELL and CONSENT
    2. Backwell Pat
    3. Hello I am stuck with an ancestor and wonder if anyone has come across the names at all – they are quite unusual. I have a Richard BACKWELL, christened 27th February 1799 in ST SAVIOUR'S DARTMOUTH– son of Mary CONSENT and Richard BACKWELL Mary and Richard married in ST ANDREW'S PLYMOUTH on 2nd November 1800 and had a further 4 children (John, Mary, Alice and Sarah), all of whom were christened in Dartmouth. Although I have a lot of information regarding this man (Richard 1799)’s life and descendants I can’t trace his father. There were BACKWELLs in Plymouth and Crediton at the time but none of them fit age-wise or else are married to someone else. I think CONSENT may be a corruption of CONSTANT. Has anyone come across either of these names in their searches? I'd be grateful for any information and happy to share any I have that's of use to someone else. Best wishes Pat Backwell ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Messenger - NEW crystal clear PC to PC calling worldwide with voicemail http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

    1. Re: ENG-DEV-SOUTHHAMS-D Digest V06 #11
    2. Five shillings was a crown and a very handy amount because it was exactly a quarter of a pound sterling. Crowns had gone out by my day but we still had half- crowns. Half-a-crown was very handy. It was worth 2 shillings and sixpence or 2/6 (two and six - half of five shillings). I remember with fondness the half-crown pieces because you could easily count eight in your hand and realise you had a pound. Whereas, when we changed to metric money, you had to count ten to the pound (2 shilling pieces only) and that is less easy to do visually (for me at least). Does this help? 3. I have a copy of the will of John Dinnis dated 22 Mar 1822 in which he bequeaths the sum of 5 shillings to each of three children. In snooping around on the net I have found some other wills (unrelated to my family) in which the sum of 5 shillings is bequeathed to various people. Is there something magic about the sum of 5 shillings? And can anyone tell me the value of that sum in the early 1800's in pounds, euros, or whatever? Just curious.
