If anyone has access to the parish records for South Brent for the period 1800 - 1820 and could oblige with two simple look-ups could they please contact me off list. Thank you. Bill Gallin DFHS 6480
This is from..... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/occupations.html "Nurses were in big demand, often providing homecare for the aged and disabled. Up until 1919 anyone could call themselves a Nurse. Putting "Nurse SMS" (Subsidiary Medical Services, i.e. anyone other than a properly qualified medical doctor) on a census form would have been an attempt to indicate that one was properly experienced and employed and not just the woman-up-the-road-who "did". I knew this rang a bell & a search of the Devon list's archives found the answer! This was posted in Aug 2001, from Joan Gaskin (not me). >>snip<< SMS or S M S in 1881 Census SMS stands for Subordinate Medical Service. It is not a qualification nor an occupation as such, but rather a category and you'll probably find that on the actual census page SMS is written in a different handwriting from the rest of the entry. The letters would have been added some time after the enumerator had filled in the form by one of the GRO's clerks as part of the process of analysing the census data. SMS was a category used to cover anyone involved in the medical world who was not a qualified doctor or dentist, or a medical student. Sub-Medical Nurse, ie a nurse taking patient(s) into her own home and being under payment and supervision of a doctor. She would not have qualifications as we think of them today, but would be a well thought of member of her community. They were usually older respectable women. Sometimes they were Nurse (SMS) - sub-medical servant - when they nursed a patient in a patient's own home. >>snip<< this might be of interest:- http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~matthew/work/occlass.htm and use your "find(on this page)" for 'nurse' HTH Louise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret Mason" <margaret.mason123@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-DEV-SOUTHHAMS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 10, 2006 8:23 PM Subject: [SPAM] [SOUTHHAMS] Occupation > Could someone please tell me what a nurse (SMS) is? Philip LAVERS or LAVIS married Elizabeth PENWELL 3 June 1832 Newton Ferrers. He was described in the Marriage Register as sojr. so he came from somewhere else. I am trying to locate his birth details in adjoining parishes. I assume that he could have been born around 1790 to 1815. Alick Lavers lavers@mail.com

If anyone is aware of any BISHOP baptisms in early PRs for the South Hams Parishes (which are not in the IGI) please let me know. I am happy to buy fiche but there are so many parishes and I don't know where to start. I am looking for the baptism of Thomas BISHOP who married Elizabeth SLUMAN in 1745 at Staverton. The only BISHOP entries in Staverton (apart from Thomas's descendants) are a burial in 1615 (George son of Robert) and couple of baptisms and a burial for children of George in 1691 and 1694. I think George married Jane POMEROY in 1689 at Buckfastleigh, had 2 children baptised in the neighbouring parish of Staverton and then moved to Modbury where they had more children (all from the IGI). It would be interesting to find where George was baptised too, his family include most of the family names in Thomas's family (but no Thomas). If anyone has any idea where I should start please let me know. Best wishes to all from Diana in Perth Western Australia
Can anyone confirm for me that there was a marriage at Chivelstone on 2nd October 1814 between William Steer Tolchard and Tryphena Gillard ? And if you can, is there any other information about them on the entry ? best wishes, as ever, Philip Steer

Morning, Would appreciate a look-up please if anyone has the Cornworthy PR's. In 1841 I have a Robert c 1827 and Eli EDMONDS c1829 who I assume would be brothers as Farm Servants to Robert DAMERELL at Lower Tideford, Cornworthy. I would love to know who there parents are. Then in 1871 there appears to be a Robert EDMONS [name is all blotched up] but am fairly sure it is meant to be EDMONDS, who is aged 19 yrs [c 1852] a farm servant to Phillip MICHELMORE at Pensford House. I would like to know the names of the parents of this Robert as well please. Regards Bev.
