    3. I wonder if anyone can advice me. I am researching my mothers paternal line of GOSS and have got back to George Goss baptised 1837 or 1838 i am not sure whether George was born to James and Ann Andrews or James and Mary. My George goss Married Betsy Warren and he married her in 1861 then became a Journman Blacksmith moving to Blackawton in 1862 and remaining there until his death in 1905. Is there anyone else researching this family either in Blackawton or Rattery for the 19century that may know if Georges parents are James and Ann or James and Mary. Many thanks! Sandra

    3. Would be very grateful if anyone can help as I'm trying to trace birth of my ggg-grandfather Andrew Couch who died 1832 Blackawton, Devon. Stated age 69, so possibly born 1763. Married to Thomasine (died Blackawton 1836 aged 65) and they had 3 children after 1803 - Andrew, Thomas and Jane. Family line continued in Sherford and Dartmouth. I'm currently searching through all parishes in South Hams around and about Blackawton but it's a very long-winded process. So far have found many Couch families but none containing this particular Andrew but would be happy to share information. Thank you Malcolm Couch Kingsteignton, Devon mal.couch@blueyonder.co.uk

    2. DAVID PACKHAM
    3. Bev Any of those just might be the case. However, another somewhat obscure interpretation is possible, particularly as you have found repetitions in different generations. This may be related to inheritance of copyhold land that passed, at some point in time, through a female line. As the title was granted by virtue of a copy of an entry in the manorial court rolls (hence 'copyhold'), a person who might subsequently inherit tended to wish to enhance his prospects by using the surname that originally appeared in the manor court rolls. Not a great deal of difference to the hyphenated surnames of today. Best wishes Dave Packham Brighton Beverley Edmonds <beverley@yourisp.com.au> wrote: Morning, Could someone please help with the likely interpretation of the following please. 3. Anne I'm not aware of any specific site for Teignmouth. I'm assuming that you are aware of the www.freebmd.org.uk and www.freecen.org.uk, which cover statutory registration of births, marriages and deaths; and the official UK censuses. Neither site is complete, but the volunteers behind them are working hard to bring regular updates online and deserve much credit. You may find some useful clues concerning Samuel ARTHUR (b 1811), although obviously statutory registration and the census started later than his birth. 3. A suggestion for all questions about births before 1837: usually, only baptisms are available. Look at the Genuki(Devon) ( http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/ ) page(s) for the parish(es) you think the birth took place in. It tells you whether the baptisms for that parish have been entered in the IGI. If so, go to FamilySearch www.familysearch.org and search! In this case, the baptisms for East and West Teignmouth are in the IGI, and a search gives us: SAMUEL FURSEY ARTHUR - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 14 APR 1811 West Teignmouth, Devon, England Ooh! Lovely! A family name as a middle name! A hint for previous generations! It's not in the South Hams, though! There might be more help on the DEVON list. Best wishes Alastair Revell Exeter, Devon United Kingdom -----Original Message----- From: eng-dev-southhams-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-dev-southhams-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anne Nazari Sent: Friday, September 22, 2006 9:02 PM To: eng-dev-southhams@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-DEV-SOUTHHAMS] 1881 Census ARTHUR I have traced my Samuel ARTHUR b 1811 in the 1881 census, see a copy below. Name: Samuel Fursey Arthur. Spouse: Nora. Birth: abt 1811 - Tynmouth, Devon, England Residence: 1881 - Bristol St Paul In, Gloucestershire, England The place of birth has been transcribed as Tynmouth, Devon, England, but isn't Tynmouth in Northumberland, England? What other name would resemble Tynmouth? It could be Lynmouth, Dartmouth or Sidmouth. I have looked at a copy of the original 1881 census and cannot make out the spelling. Could someone with knowledge of the county towns of Devon look at this census record please? I need a second opinion. Also is anyone researching the name ARTHUR? Kind Regards, Anne. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
