I am looking for photos (old & new) and information concerning THE BULL'S HEAD INN on 7 Queen Street, Whittington, listed in the 1881 Census as having been run by my g.g. grandmother, CATHERINE DUCKETT. I understand it is still in operation today. Thanks very much for any help. Loretta Myrter
There were two Bull's heads in Whittington, at various times: one in Old Whitt and one in New Whitt. The one in Old Whittington still exists, and stands at the junction of Whittington Hill and Broomhill Road. The one in New Whittington sttod on South Street North and was closed around 1970 before being turned into flats. If you are prepared to dig through their "Innspire" archives on line at http://www.chesterfieldcamra.org.uk/innspire.htm the Chesterfield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale featured New Whittington pubs in a recent issue and I distinctly recall seeing a photo of the flats that the pub became. I notice that the next and previous households to Catherine Duckett's on the 1881 census are both in South Street, Whittington, so I am sure that your Bull's Head was the New Whittington one. Cheers Stuart.
