    2. Stuart Basson
    3. A new name for me... Specifically, Harriet Ann CHAPPELL, probably born Duckmanton, likely married to Francis BOWER in JFM 1875. Anyone else looking at her lot? Cheers Stu PS - while I'm on - have discovered an interesting aspect of the 1901 address search which is probably common knowledge to all, but... One of my hobbies is the history of pubs in the borough and I've found that if you put "Inn" or similar in the "street " field, you get up all the inns in the area that have been named as such on the address part of the returns. Has helped me find a couple of new ones so far. Might well apply to other such key words, too.

    3. Hi Rita, I think we've emailed before. Nice to hear from somebody who remembers Woodhead's. I think they sold their business in the 1960s or 70s. Since then they've had a restaurant business and fairly recently opened "Woodhead's Coffee House" so the name is back. I remember Woodhead's on my visits to Chesterfield from Sheffield to see my relations in the 1930's, 40's & 50' My grandfather was the Edward of E. Woodhead & Sons. He died in 1910 and then my uncles and their sons ran it. Edward's father, James, took over the business of his brother-in-law, George Barker, in 1844. As you will see from my email, at that time there was a Joseph Woodhead in business in Low Pavement. My mother said that James' father was a Joseph Woodhead but I can find nothing about him and wonder if this is him. Sorry if I've gone on a bit. I hope Germany is warming up now. 3. Hi Jayne, Thanks for the offer, but I have been in your neck of the woods a few time and have been to Lakeview Cemetery in Thorold which is how I know what the tombstone says. Tolon is not a know townland. I have searched for many years and have come to the conclusion that the tombstone etcher either got Tolon or Derbyshire wrong. There is a townland just over the border in Nottinghamshire that is close in spelling and since William's wife, Annie's tombstone says she was born in Nottinghamshire...who knows? I think I need to actually get to England to get it straight. Hopefully, on the next trip to Ireland, I can get over. Last time they were fully involved with foot and mouth disease, so I didn't go. Thanks again for writing and for the offer of help. 3. Hi Pat, I live in St. Catharines, Ontario and Thorold is a suburb of St. Catharines. Do you have a photograph of William's headstone or just the inscription? If you don't have photographs let me know and I'll see what I can do for you. As for Tolon, DBY check John Palmer's Wirksworth site for Derbyshire placenames at: http://www.wirksworth.org.uk/DPI-T.htm Take care Jayne http://www.webcomcreations.com/memory/index.htm > I am looking for any info on William Carter. > > William Carter is my gggrandfather. 3. Hi Listers, My great grandfather RICHARD BATES "emigrated" from Leicestershire to Derbyshire in 1867 after his 18 year old first wife died during the birth of my grandfather, Charles. Richard blamed Charles for the demise of his wife, dumped the lad on his maternal grandmother and disappeared. He was later found in Chesterfield working on the Midland Railway and with a new wife, ETHELDRA [Wright] and six children. It is the descendants of this new family I am seeking. RICHARD BATES b.1847 Mountsorrel, Lei. d. 18 June 1891 Whittington ETHELDRA [Wright] b. 1849/50 Newbold DBY. d. June¼ 1940 Chesterfield. Children, all born in Whittington: ELIZA born c.1874 JOSEPH ARTHUR born 19.2.1878 EDGAR born 1882 FRANK born 1884 GERTRUDE born 1886 ETHEL born 11.12.1890 There is also a small possibility that there could a JOHN C. born about December 1878 or January 1879. Could the "C" in John C. stand for Charles, after his first son? Would anyone who knows of, or can relate to, the above family, please contact me Off-List. Many thanks for your time in reading the above. Harvey Bates Adelaide, Sth. Australia. A volunteer for: THE LEICESTERSHIRE LOOK-UP EXCHANGE http://uk.geocities.com/leicslookup/

I have found references to this family in the following parishes, Chesterfield, North Wingfield, Ashover, Morton, Alfreton etc Richard WILBOURNE married Phoebe COWLISHAW of North Wingfield, in Chesterfield 1720/1 these are my earliest WILBOURNEs. I would be interested in any references to either WILBOURNE or WILBRAHAM in the above areas. Thank you Valerie Chesterfield

    3. Hi Kathy, The only way you can find out the date is to send for the certificate. All births, marriages and deaths are registered in quarters - no exact dates are ever given in the records, only on the certificate. Linda Question: for their marriage, I have only "June > Quarter, 1883." Can anyone give me an exact date? >

    1. [Chesterfield] WOODHAM family
    2. Kathy Wilson
    3. Dear friends My paternal grandfather, George WOODHAM, was born in Swineshead, Hunts. By 1881, he was living in Chesterfield and working as a railway wagon driver. He married my grandmother, Elizabeth Ann YOUNG, in 1883. It was then that I believe he moved to Dickenson Road in Hasland to live. At some time after this, he took over a shop at the bottom of South Street, and sold saddlery, chandlery, and dry goods. The shop was later known as Leggard's. The family later moved to Albion Road, near the football ground. My grandfather eventually went bankrupt, and died in 1929. Question: for their marriage, I have only "June Quarter, 1883." Can anyone give me an exact date? Question: Does anyone know when my grandfather took over the shop on South Street, and also when he had to leave it? Any further information gratefully received. 3. Dear Paul, I have Hannah Berseford, b.1714, Matlock, who married William Else from Handley. The family then moved to Wooley Moor. Hannah's parents were Paul Basford, b.1678 in Ashover, and Rebecca, b. circa 1683, Ashover. Paul's parents were Godfrey Basford, b.1655, Ashover and Sarah, b.1659, Ashover. Godfrey's father was Thomas Basford, b. circa 1617. I'm afraid that is all I have. 1. [Chesterfield] Goodwin, Dimberline, Carr, Millthorpe
    2. My main line of interest is the Goodwin's desendent from William Goodwin who moved from Codnor to Staveley in late 1700's. His decendents are related to the Carr, Millthorpe, Dimberline, Margerison, Nuttall, Pollard and Simpson families. As Dimberline has already been mentioned I should state that the main tree here is Peter Dimberline b 1705, Peter Dimberline b 1734, Richard b 1777, Samuel b 1801. Cathy Goodwin
