    1. [Chesterfield] Woollen family

    3. Hi My wife's forbears on her fathers side[SMITH ] came mostly from Sheffield. However, her gt gt gt gt grandfather one ROBERT WOOLLEN** was born in Derbyshire in a place called Moorhall, Barlow. On current maps they are close to Chesterfield so I presume they would come within the ambit of the Chesterfield list. This being so can anyone help me with expanding the info which I list below [researched and written down between 1875 and 1920 ] or pointing me in the direction of records that would assist in this endeavour. Joseph Woollen of Moorhall in the parish of Barlow, county of Derby II Robert Woollen of Moorhall bapt 22 May 1693 Married ...................?? II Joseph Woollen of Moorhall bapt 24 April 1726 Married.....................?? II Robert Woollen** of Moorhall and Gatefields, Sheffield born 20 Dec 1758 married Hannah Wilson of Darnall, Sheffield 23 Oct 1780 died Sheffield 3 Oct 1837 II Elizabeth Woollen born 13 Sept 1796 Sheffield married 12 March 1819 in the Parish Church Sheffield to William Smith, Barrister died Sheffield 12 April 1833 6 weeks after the birth of her 9th child. Robert Woollen was a Miller and Baker and also a contractor suppling forage to the Barracks in Sheffield. I believe Moorhall was the source of the produce he used in his businesses. Any help in this quest would be much appreciated. John Elmes Chancellor Park, Sunshine Coast, SEQ, Australia.

    1. [Chesterfield] MARSHALL, JOHNSON, WALL, RODGERS, CANTRILL, CLAYTON
    2. Aileen Howard
    3. Hello everyone I have just subscribed to this list and would like to post my current Chesterfield interests as follows: MARSHALL JOHNSON WALL RODGERS CLAYTON CANTRILL Mary WALL (gt grandmother) married Samuel RODGERS in Chesterfield Register Office on 23rd November 1862, aged 23. At the time of their marriage her address is given as Holywell Cross, but unfortunately there are no details of Mary's family either at this address, or on the marriage certificate (could her father be dead, or perhaps didn't approve of the marriage?). Were there many Register Office weddings in the 19th Century? I found a Mary WALL on Free BMD in 1838, but this Mary was born in Ashover, and in the 1871 and 1881 Census my Mary is recorded as born in Hasland or in Chesterfield. My sister says Mary WALL had Irish origins, but no one else in the family has heard of this. Could the fact she was married in the Register Office imply she was a Roman Catholic? Witnesses were John and Mary Ann CLAYTON - does anyone know this family? Also looking for the family of Maria JOHNSON (gt grandma) who married William MARSHALL on 11th November 1852 in Chesterfield Parish Church. Maria was 23 and born in Chesterfield and William 27, born in Hady. Maria's father was Charles JOHNSON, farmer and miller, from Chesterfield, William's father was also William MARSHALL, a labourer. Witnesses were Joseph CANTRILL and Hannah JOHNSON. Does anyone have any connections with these families? I would be very grateful for ANY information or ideas regarding the above. Kind regards, Aileen (from Notts)

    1. [Chesterfield] Old Brampton / Youlgreave
    2. Jane Watson
    3. I'm posting this to both the Derbysgen and Chesterfield lists, so apologies in advance to those who receive it twice! I'm looking for the parents of Joan Sterndall/Sterndale, who was baptised in Old Brampton on 26/6/1659. Her father was called John. The IGI shows a John Sterndall of Old Brampton, marrying circa 1658, but does not give any details about the spouse. However, there are also another 6 entries for a John Sterndale / Sterndall, who marries an Ann Garrett on either 1st or 4th December 1655, but the place of marriage is either Youlgreave or Chesterfield. Could anybody with local knowledge tell me if these areas are close enough together to be the same place of marriage, and also if it is likely that the name is common enough in this area at that time for there to be 2 John Sterndales involved, or is it more likely this is one and the same person? Incidentally, the one marrying in 1658 was born circa 1633, and the one marrying in 1655 was born circa 1630, making them both the same age at their marriage. I would be interested in any thoughts on the matter! Jane Watson.

    1. [Chesterfield] Poxons in Chesterfield
    2. John Poxon
    3. Hi Everyone, I am new to the list, and will provide details of my interest in Chesterfield. My POXON family resided at Chesterfield during the early part of the 20th century, especially in Schoolboard Lane. They were active in Ilkeston from about 1864, when John Poxon of Newthorpe married Mary Jarvis of Stanton by Dale. John and Mary were my great-grandparents. John was the verger at St Mary's Ilkeston for many years, and the family had a strong association with the Church. John died at 32 School Board Lane in 1923, Other addresses mentioned include Brockwell Lane. Does anyone have any connection with this family? Regards John Poxon

Rita in Germany Hello Rita, Thanks for the offer, I am actually looking for a family named TAYLOR, the head of the house was a William and there would be a daughter named Edith Annie age 5. Edith Annie was my mothers foster mother (also aunt through marriage), she always indicated that she was born in Shirebrook but according to the 1901 census she appears to have came from Staffordshire. I know she had a brother and 2 sisters but am unable to recall their first names. Incidentally I am no longer actively searching for TOLLEY's as I have now discovered after 15 years searching that in 1881 they changed their name from TOBEY. Hope you are having a Happy Easter. Hello Jayne, What a small world it is. Thanks for refreshing my geographical memory, I knew Bolsover and visited often as a child as I grew up 3 miles away in Glapwell and went to Shirebrook Grammar School (at LAngwith Junction). I was surprised that Shirebook didn't come up on the LDS family history site as its early church records are noted to be with Pleasley, which is why I wondered if the 1891 census records would be under Pleasley or Langwith. But then they have other mistakes such as saying that St Michaels church is in Pleasley Vale when it is in Pleasley. Please forgive my rambling I hope you have an enjoyable trip, just say hello to Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse for my if you are passing through. Meantime i will order the Langwith fiche and see what comes up. Iris Tolley, Auckland, City of Sails, New Zealand.
