Sheila, What other information do you have on John and Margaret Cadman ? I've been lookinginto this family, but haven't come across a John and Margaret from Chesterfield. Most of the families are from Sheffield or Eckington not far from Chesterfield. Well, it has been a month or so, but this is one I received yesterday but didn't even open the email because I thought it was spam. Hi Listers, The present digging in France which is uncovering the remains of soldiers from the first world war has prompted me to ask where one can register a claim for dog tags or any other any other items, recovered from the remains of a relative. I would appreciate a postal address where I can register a claim for any items recovered of an uncle who, according to the Commonwealth War Graves commission, has no known grave. Please reply off list to: Harvey Bates, bateshe@senet.com.au
Hi, Glenda, I Notice the "Narrow Lane" placename on your post - you may be interested to know that the street still exits, but after some late Victorian redevelopment it has become "Broad Pavement" - talk about coming up in the world! It runs between Knifesmithgate and Saltergate, at the most eastern ends of each of those roads. Hope this is of some use Best wishes Stuart Basson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glenda Light" <glendalight@manx.net> To: <ENG-DERBYSHIRE-CHESTERFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 10, 2003 12:21 PM Subject: [Chesterfield] Correction to MCDERMOTTinformation > Aplogies to all listers > > Due to forgetting that a calculation back from a census date can cover a possible original 2 year period due to postion of birhdate, I have researched and given some incorrect info: > > Previously given info : > > James MCDERMOTT b Chesterfield 15/1/1857 > Father: Thomas b 1833 > Mother: Rose nee GARTLAND b 1836 > Wife : Elizabeth nee PALMER 1888 > > Should be: > > James MCDERMOTT b Chesterfield 7/9/1856 (Narrow Lane) > Father: James (bdate as yet untraced), a journeyman cordwainer, > Mother: Elizabeth nee KASY (bdate yet untraced) > Wife: Elizabeth nee PALMER > > If anyone has info in the light of the new information, I would be very grateful. > > Regards > > Glenda Lightowler > Isle of Man > > > > > > > > ==== ENG-DERBYSHIRE-CHESTERFIELD Mailing List ==== > Check out the list's website for rules, guidelines, how to post to the list, view archives, unsubscribe, change from L to D or D to L: > http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/Chesterfield/ > >

Have you thought of Derbyshire Family History Society, Disks, CDs Fisches for the Whole of Derbyshire are reasonable priced, look at the website. If you have an LDS office near you, they will help. I went to an office and had 3 hits in an hour there - all in the Chesterfield Area. Hope this helps. Hi Karen, do you have places in Derbyshire & later dates for your REDGATE ancestors?. I am researching REDGATE in the Smalley/Morley areas from a marriage of Peter REDGATE on 25 FEb 1695/96 to Elizabeth WHILDON in Morley. His daughter Mary REDGATE was baptised on 13 Feb 1725/26 in Smalley, Mary married James MATHER. Hello! I am looking for my Redgate ancestors. They are traced back to Ireland in the latter 1600's but as a child I remember my mother and great aunt telling me they originally came from England. So far I have not traced them there and can't seem to. It would have been about the mid to late 1600's they left England and went to Ireland. The names in the family are William, Margaret, Catherine, Jane, Andrew, John, George, Ann and others but those are the predominant ones. Does anyone know of anyone else who might be researching this name? Hello All I think I have actually posted to this site before but forgive me if I mention again. Having great trouble locating Thomas MCDERMOTT father (Master Cordwainer) and " " son. (Iron Moulder) Only record I have is a) Marriage cert of younger Thomas to Rose GARTLAND (father James. a Land Bailiff) in1856 (being his second marriage) b) Birth cert of their son James in 1857 Addresses involved are a)/Wheat Sheaf Yard/Castle Yard b) Spa Lane I have a death cert for a Thomas McDermott, a coal miner, in 1873 at Union Workhouse which fits with the son's age but..... Is it possible to maybe access workhouse records? Would they be likely to give any more info than the death cert does? I and a good samaritan have looked at 1851 and 1861 census but no go. They seem not to exist outside 1856/7. I have searched Rose in free Bmd under both names but unable to find anything, unless she emigrated to USA and I don't have access to those records at Ancestry. Any advice much appreciated. As I live on Isle of Man, it is difficult for me to do any hands on searching. Thank you Glenda

Hello all I am happy to be part of this list. I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who is researching the Spicer surname in the Sheffield area. I have Alfred SPICER, 26 years old on the 1891 census, husband of Maria, 25 yrs old on the same census. Alfred was a blacksmith, born in Stockbridge Hampshire. He was the brother of my g-g-grandfather, Arthur Edward Spicer. I would like to know their descendents and Maria's background. take care, here's hoping...
